Vitangelo Moscarda, il protagonista dell'ultimo, straordinario romanzo di Pirandello, in seguito alla banale osservazione della moglie a proposito del suo naso che pende un po' da una parte, si mette sulle tracce del vero se stesso, accorgendosi però, che se il corpo può essere unico, così non accade per l'anima. La sua ricerca finisce per prendere inquietanti aspetti che si avvicinano ad una molteplicità di sapore faustiano, fino ad una modificazione tale dei propri comportamenti, che spinge sua moglie, i parenti e gli amici a considerarlo pazzo.

Right will triumph over wrong. But war can be an illusion, stirred up by schemers and opportunists to take something from other nations that may or may not be right. As blood and limb are sacrificed the true cost is seen but often set to one side as the dispute becomes embedded in emotions and reason falls away.

Racconto, commedia , in italiano, in siciliano, “La giara” rappresenta una delle vette creative di Luigi Pirandello. Il racconto si snoda in una progressione di colpi di scena godibilissimi fino allo scioglimento finale, all’apoteosi. Vicino ai canoni del verismo, “La giara” sa essere completo racconto, felice rappresentazione di caratteri e di paesaggi. Da un punto di vista narrativo, non ideologico, è quanto di meglio Pirandello abbia scritto.

Questa imponente raccolta di novelle (237) scritte tra il 1884 e il 1936, è uno dei capolavori della letteratura italiana. Nel progetto originale dovevano essere 365, ma la scrittura si interruppe per la morte dell'autore.
