I due ussari fu scritta nel 1856. Il titolo originale era "Padre e figlio" ma fu poi cambiato. Il racconto si svolge in fatti in due periodi diversi, a venti anni di distanza, in cui i due protagonisti sono padre e figlio, e con loro due generazioni a confronto; parallelamente a due personaggi femminili a confronto. Calvino osservava che i due Turbin (il più anziano probabilmente si ispirava ad un parente dell'autore) appartenevano rispettivamente alla generazione che aveva sconfitto Napoleone ai primi dell'Ottocento e a quella che nel 1848 aveva represso le rivoluzioni in Polonia e Ungheria.

"Che cosa è Guerra e Pace? Non è romanzo, non poema, tanto meno cronaca storica. E’ semplicemente ciò che l’autore intese dire in quella precisa forma in cui l’ha detto.” Ecco le parle che dice Tolstoj nel poscritto alla fine dell’opera, non avendo avuto , a detta sua, “né il tempo né la capacità” di scrivere una prefazione per dichiarare lo scopo prefissosi. Lasciando quindi al lettore/ascoltatore il gradito onere di farsi da sé una sua opinione, si può dire soltanto che questo romanzo occupò cinque anni di lavoro continuo dell’autore....

Il tema fu suggerito all'autore da un amico giurista che gli raccontò un fatto reale ovvero la storia di una ragazza di 16 anni che, rimasta orfana, venne ospitata in casa di parenti. Qui, sedotta da un giovane appartenente a quel ramo familiare, una volta scoperta la gravidanza, venne scacciata dalla benefattrice ed abbandonata dall'uomo. I due si riincontrarono poi in situazioni drammatiche. Ma il romanzo ha anche connotati autobiografici.

Questo racconto fu completato da Tolstoj nel 1889, fu poi aggiunta una variante al finale, e , infine, pubblicato postumo nel 1911. Lo scrittore allude nell’opera alla sua relazione amorosa avuta con una contadina. Tolstoj fece leggere l'opera al figlio Lev (che gli aveva confidato di essere turbato da pensieri di donne), ma poi tenne il manoscritto nascosto alla moglie, dentro una poltrona. La moglie lo trovò nel maggio 1909 e ne seguì una violenta lite. Come è noto, lo scrittore si allontanò poi da casa l’anno successivo.Cornice musicale: Petrushka, di Igor Stravinsky.
