The final book in the Devil’s Backbone series, a spicy and dark “why choose” romance series from TikTok sensation Tate James.
Dear Reader,
I’ve spent too many nights caught between reality and nightmare, each bleeding into the other like a twisted dream I can’t wake from. The Devil’s Backbone Society continues to host our deepest terrors.
The weight of betrayal crushes me, pressing down on my chest—bitter and suffocating. I don’t know what would be worse: losing the ones I love, the ones who have become my anchors, or losing myself entirely.
In the end, is there even a difference?

The author leaned a bit too much on racy content in this last book in the series. It cheapened the characters and made them seem a little ridiculous - even obnoxious at times.
But the story held up and - though predictable - still gave a satisfying conclusion.
Excellent duet narration…

Lots of spice… almost too much?!

I’m not entirely sure what was missing, but it often felt like we were just following around college kids while events unfolded without much emotional payoff.
The reveal around Jocelyn was especially anticlimactic. The idea that everything stemmed from “science” mixed with jealousy over her husband’s new wife just felt underwhelming.. after all the buildup that’s it?!.
Also we never really got answers about how Ashley was able to overcome Jocelyn’s command to shoot Nate. That felt like a major thing that was left unresolved.
The series as a whole was entertaining, and the full-cast audio is excellent. I waited to read this book until the audio release (which was delayed), and I do think that gap made it harder to jump back in. I’d strongly recommend listening to or reading these back to back, because I did feel a bit lost starting this one and had to refresh my memory.
Overall, not a bad just not as strong or satisfying as the first two.
Great audio not the best ending to the series.
