Life doesn't always go according to plan. For ex-CIA Agent Samuel Caulfield, his plans were ripped out from under him after a chance encounter in a firefight.

One deal with a dark goddess later, and he's cast into the trenches of a Victorian world, with clashing empires, Elves, Dwarves, Dragons, and more. Surrounded by death, on the front lines of a war without intelligence, he'll have to rely on his wits, his platoon, and a surprise gift from his goddess.

Will all that he's been given be enough to overcome the plots and machinations of those that oppose him?

With 800 books in my audible library I have heard much. This first book was great with a story and characters. It did not use lack of info or super op characters. The mc is it a bit of a prude and never heard the expression “ when in Rome”
The narration was excellent. Being this authors first book on audible I hope it doesn’t take 18 months for column 2

for the first book of a brand new author that was a pretty fantastic opener to a new series. the author I believe stated in his bio that he's interested in writing weird fantasy stories and this checks out in my opinion. basically think of a proxy war between gods where mortal Champions fight on World's throughout the cosmos at every level of Technology. some have magic with fantasy races and others have aliens, ships, and Mechs. the main character here is a former Army Ranger turn CIA operative who loses his wife when his cover is blown and he won't play ball with the Mexican cartel. he gets his revenge at the very beginning of the book but ends up dying shortly after. chosen as a champion he's dropped into a world around the technological level of World War I complete with guns and explosives. then you add all the fantasy stuff complete with magic and Dragons and it's got its own unique twist. now as a general rule I tend to take it easy on the first book of any series as Beginnings can be shaky even from tried and true authors. this book did have a couple of places that were rather rough in my opinion. the short of it was that a couple of characters who you would have expected to become mortal enemies in their respective scenes suddenly did a 180 at the drop of a hat which didn't really make sense to me. all in all though I was fully entertained and am interested in checking out a book too. The narrator did a good job in my opinion. so, I'm simply going to say Well done to everybody who had a hand in bringing this story to us, the audiobook listeners.

that was pretty amazing

Love finding a new author that offers a title such as this. Wonderful story, well paced, never dragging. Narrator does a wonderful job with the different voices. MC is engaging as are the side characters. Definitely worth a read or listen.

I was blown away by how good this is. Hadn't really heard of it until I saw it mentioned on Reddit and now I'm completely invested in the characters and series. I hope a sequel comes soon.

Also, Melanie kills it. She has become one of my favorite narrators after hearing her work on this and a couple other titles.

Seriously, give this a shot and hopefully there's a lot more to come.

One of the best starts in the genre
