Minalan gave up a promising career as a professional warmage to live the quiet life of a village spellmonger in the remote mountain valley of Boval. It was a peaceful, beautiful little fief, far from the dangerous feudal petty squabbles of the Five Duchies, on the world of Callidore. There were cows. Lots of cows. And cheese.

For six months things went well: He found a quaint little shop, he befriended the local lord, the village folk loved him, he found a sharp young apprentice to help out, and, best yet, he met a comely young widow with the prettiest eyes.

Then one night Minalan is forced to pick up his mageblade again to defend his adopted home from the vanguard of an army of goblins—gurvani, they call themselves—bent on a genocidal crusade against all mankind. And that was the good news. The bad news was that their shamans were armed with more magical power than has been seen since the days of the ancient Imperial Magocracy—and their leader, a mysterious, vengeful force of hate and dark magic, is headed directly to Boval Vale, along with a massive invading army of gurvani. The good people of Boval and their spellmonger have only one choice: To hole up in the over-sized Boval Castle and hope they can endure a siege against hundreds of thousands of goblins.

When the people look to him for hope, Minalan does his best, but the odds are depressing: There are multitudes of goblins, and they want Boval Vale as a staging ground for a vengeful invasion of the whole Five Duchies. Add to his troubles a jealous rival mage, a motley band of mercenaries, a delusional liege lord who insists victory is at hand despite the hordes at his door, a dour castellan, a moody, pregnant girlfriend, and a catty ex-girlfriend who specializes in sex magic—all trapped in a stinking, besieged castle with no hope of rescue, and you'll understand why Minalan is willing to take his chances with the goblins.

All that stands between the gurvani horde and the people of the Five Duchies is one tired, overwhelmed baker's son who wanted nothing more than to be a simple village spellmonger.

If you could sum up Spellmonger in three words, what would they be?

Love this kind of easy to listen fantasy. I also like that the same characters carry on for many books! So HURRY and put the rest on audible so I can by them.

Any additional comments?

I really enjoyed this story. The narrator did wonders to bringing it alive. I couldn't stop listening.

Wonderful

Would you try another book from Terry Mancour and/or John Lee?

Maybe John Lee

Would you be willing to try another book from Terry Mancour? Why or why not?

Probably not. His writing style is not for me.

Did John Lee do a good job differentiating all the characters? How?

He did. I thought the main character was read a bit flat, but I guess that was intentional, as he was supposed to be a bit smart a** and snarky.

Did Spellmonger inspire you to do anything?

Find another book.

Any additional comments?

I am shocked at the positive reviews. I don't see the appeal of this book at all. I made it to the end, but I almost quit several times. Lots of rewinds because I kept realizing I wasn't listening. The sex magic stuff was weird and kind of basic. The main character is really the only character that is developed, so if you don't love him, you don't have much to love. I really wanted to like this book. I tried, but it was just not for me. I won't be moving on to Book 2.

Disappointed in this one

Minalan is Spellmonger, a Warmage, a Womanizer and quite possibly our best last hope; he also begins this story very hung over and wishing that damn bell would stop ringing.

When a horde of Goblins invade his new home in retirement from his Warmage's career in the army he drop's out of bed with a hangover and begins to sway through everything from a Goblin army to ex girlfriends who knows which one is more deadly?

Much like the Dresden Files and many of the other epic works in fantasy this book has a more real life in bum-fuck-nowhere charm with a real man who gets into lots of trouble you can relate to. Especially with women.

I found the main character to be compelling not too heady or intellectual but more like a "blooded" professional who knows what getting dirty is like and takes whatever pleasure out of life he can get, while participating in the everyday demands his world puts on him.

Adventure finds you, even if you run away.

Where does Spellmonger rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

The voice talent puts this book much higher on my ranking than I believe it otherwise would have been. The story is solid and action packed. The fantasy is comfortable for those familiar with D&D type setting but different enough to remain interesting. Even though the setting feels "old world" the language is contemporary and relatable.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Spellmonger?

When the small party of main character, his apprentice and his friend and hedge maze enter the treefolk lands. The vivid descriptions were like a warm tradewind in my mind's eye.

Which scene was your favorite?

The first time the main character interacts with the other regions Spellmonger is very satisfying. For me I deal with those types of people at work all the time and seeing one put in their place was amusing.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes. I had a hard time stopping myself from staying up very late just listening.

Any additional comments?

Well done and I want more!!

Suprisingly good entertainment in saturated genre
