Febbraio 1519. La brezza mattutina sparge il suo soffio su Roma, avvolgendola in un'atmosfera incantata. Raffaello Sanzio passeggia assorto per via Giulia, lungo l'argine del Tevere, lasciandosi ispirare dai colori che si riflettono nell'acqua e nel cielo, che gli pare una tela color lapislazzuli, arricchita solo da una punta di viola. Agostino Chigi, il banchiere più ricco della città, lo ha convocato al suo servizio per dipingere la loggia di villa Farnesina, un palazzo sontuoso nel cuore di Trastevere, frequentato dai più noti artisti e intellettuali che vivono nell'Urbe.

Il bel Salaì, allievo e figliastro di Leonardo da Vinci, ha messo la testa a posto. Dopo una vita passata tra donne, scorribande e mangiate si è sistemato con moglie e figli su un terreno di Leonardo, dove ha costruito una casetta. Quando il patrigno muore, sorpresa! metà del terreno è andata in eredità a un servo di Leonardo, e la linea di confine passa giusto sotto casa sua. Inizia un costosissimo processo che costringe Salaì a indebitarsi con un crudele usuraio.

Roma, 1508. Il giovane Salaì, apprendista pittore e figlio adottivo di Leonardo da Vinci, è appena giunto da Firenze nella Città Eterna su incarico del suo celebre patrigno. Deve trovare a tutti i costi un libro appena stampato nella lontana Alsazia, in cui è contenuta la prima carta geografica dell'America. Ma nessuno lo deve sapere. Leonardo infatti, invidiosissimo di Colombo, Vespucci e degli altri grandi esploratori, vuole plagiare la carta dell'America e darla alle stampe a suo nome, per fare bella figura con gli amici fiorentini.

Roma, primavera 1501. Salaì, apprendista pittore, scapestrato e sciupafemmine, scrive a un ignoto destinatario lo sgrammaticato resoconto del suo viaggio nell'Urbe. Il giovane è arrivato da Firenze al seguito del patrigno, un vecchio frustrato e squattrinato dalla testa zeppa di strane invenzioni che non funzionano mai: Leonardo da Vinci. Ufficialmente Leonardo è venuto nella Città Santa per studiare dal vivo l'antica architettura romana. In realtà è stato chiamato per un'indagine delicatissima: dovrà scoprire chi sta spargendo voci calunniose e infamanti sul pontefice.

Évidemment, Pardaillan père et fils se sont retrouvés et reconnus. Une fois encore, les chevaliers de Pardaillan se montrent dépourvus d'avidité, eux pour qui la réussite n'est jamais matérielle. Dans ce nouvel épisode, Michel Zévaco nous brosse un tableau attachant du fils de Pardaillan qui fait honneur à son père. En France, la menace pèse toujours sur Henri IV et un certain Ravaillac entre en scène et le trésor de la Fausta reste introuvable.

Nous sommes à Paris en 1609, Henri IV règne sur la France pacifiée. Le chevalier de Pardaillan, qui n'a pas retrouvé son fils, rencontre un jeune truand, Jehan-le-Brave, en qui il ne tarde pas à reconnaître l'enfant de Fausta. Les aventures du Chevalier de Pardaillan sont celles que l'on dévore sans voir passer les heures, pour retrouver, confus et enthousiaste le bouillonnement d'une épopée traversée par la générosité d'un héros qui se place aux côtés de d'Artagnan et de Cyrano de Bergerac.

Nous sommes donc toujours en 1588, sous le règne d'Henri III, en lutte contre le duc de Guise et la Sainte ligue, le premier soutenu par Pardaillan, et le second par Fausta... Sans vous dévoiler les péripéties multiples et passionnantes de cette histoire, nous découvrirons que le duc de Guise et Henri III mourront tous deux (Zévaco, malgré son imagination, ne peut changer l'Histoire...), et que Pardaillan vaincra Fausta.
