When Politics and Cultivation Collide…

Summoned by the king, Sen reluctantly goes to the capital. However, the path there is anything but easy. Sen must battle his way to the city, revealing that not everyone is pleased by his imminent return.

When he finally reaches the city, he finds it changed. The web of politics has only grown more tangled in his absence, and now cultivator emissaries from beyond the Mountains of Sorrow have arrived to further cloud the waters. Much to his horror, Sen finds himself pressed into service as a distraction and deterrent to those very cultivators.

While the name Judgment’s Gale conjures fear in the capital, it may not prove enough as enemies old and new reveal themselves. While Sen tries to navigate around uncertain agendas and noble plots, he will be forced to take actions he would have once considered inconceivable. And the wandering cultivator’s life will never be the same…

This was another hit in the series! keep them coming, I can't wait to see what awaits our MC after such major accomplishments in this book.

Another great book!

The writing is good. But the protagonist has lost his way. He is just so apathetic it is depressing. The story really has been about the creative way the protagonist kills those who wrong him. While he has his reasons for each death the creativity borders on cold blooded. And the character I so enjoyed has become painful to listen too. This may be my off ramp if the next book follows form.

A quality entry but apathetic

We’re heading back to the capital. Sen answered the king’s summons. And leaves a trail of bodies in his route. Many bodies. New characters are introduced. New characters bring new plot lines for the future. All that and more as Sen deals with nobles. Nobles and sects. Still a compelling story with the humor and action we expect from the series. I really have enjoyed the story so far. there was a point with one of the previous books that the author made a decision which pushed me in a direction where I walked away from the story. I am happy that I decided to come back and give the story a second chance. to be clear the writing is well done. it's just that the author has made some decisions perhaps to balance out the story that we're not aligned with my personal preferences. at that point I'm not going to bash the story or rate It Low. if there is something particularly gnarly like a torture scene I might go ahead and put that into my review just to give people a heads up. there were a couple brutal scenes in this book. still it fit with the story and wasn't too far off base. the story is decently sized, I'm more or less consumed it in one go which is why I'm trying to limit any specific details about what happens in this entry. it'll be a while I think before we get the sequel. I have no doubt that we'll get a sequel. this entry in the story pretty much covers everything that happens at the Capitol.

my thoughts

love the books, but there is one habit of the writer I think is getting worse and distracting. the endless internal monolog full of neurotic whining and false humility is starting to erode my affection for the protagonist. I hope this stops soon before he becomes totally intolerable.

love the way he deals with sect members though, need more of that!

one thing holding this series back IMO
