Two sisters raised in fear are about to find out why in a chilling novel of psychological suspense from the author of The Thinnest Air.

Ignorant of civilization and cautioned against its evils, nineteen-year-old Wren and her two sisters, Sage and Evie, were raised in off-the-grid isolation in a primitive cabin in upstate New York. When the youngest grows gravely ill, their mother leaves with the child to get help from a nearby town. And they never return.

As months pass, hope vanishes. Supplies are low. Livestock are dying. A brutal winter is bearing down. Then comes the stranger. He claims to be looking for the girls’ mother, and he’s not leaving without them.

To escape, Wren and her sister must break the rule they’ve grown up with: never go beyond the forest.

Past the thicket of dread, they come upon a house on the other side of the pines. This is where Wren and Sage must confront something more chilling than the unknowable. They’ll discover what’s been hidden from them, what they’re running from, and the secrets that have left them in the dark their entire lives.

3stars only and that was only for the first 70 percent of the read .The last 30 percent deserved no stars .It was going well then the book took a turn of the absurd and ridiculous. There was a explanation for the wife’s past that was so over the top stupid that it literally ruined the entire book and read for me personally. The twist was insulting to the reader ,I was dumbfounded to think anyone could write such a twist like that .I can’t ever recommend the read because of the way the story fell apart at the end .

It was going good until the end when it turned ridiculous

Before I get into to the plot holes, I have to say that the narrator who reads Wren's chapters has a horrible male characters voice that pulled me out of the story everytime. I would have preferred the other narrator read the whole thing.

The plot feels weak and lacks depth. I will try to review without spoilers so people can decide for them selves.
I felt like there were so many holes in the story line that left me asking questions. I feel like it lacked credibility to make the story really good.
As others have said, the husband's secret is too far fetched to be real. This is a good example of mental health mismanagement across all of the characters.
The Stillwater Girls was my first read from this author, and it turned me off from reading anything else by her.

So many holes in the plot.

I’m not sure why I was skeptical - the storyline didn’t sound like something I would normally listen to.

But I was ENTRANCED. I loved the characters, the development, the emotion and description, the suspense leading up to the end, the twists the turns, all of it! 10/10 one of the best I have listened to in a while.

SO GOOD
