No matter what you see, no matter what you’ve heard, assume nothing.

Adam and Sophie Warner and their three-year-old daughter are vacationing in Washington State’s Hood Canal for Memorial Day weekend. It’s the perfect getaway to unplug—and to calm an uneasy marriage. But on Adam’s first day out on the water, he sees Sophie abducted by a stranger. A hundred yards from shore, Adam can’t save her. And Sophie disappears.

In a nearby cabin is another couple, Kristen and Connor Moss. Unfortunately, beyond what they’ve heard in the news, they’re in the dark when it comes to Sophie’s disappearance. For Adam, at least there’s comfort in knowing that Mason County detective Lee Husemann is an old friend of his. She’ll do everything she can to help. She must.

But as Adam’s paranoia about his missing wife escalates, Lee puts together the pieces of a puzzle. The lives of the two couples are converging in unpredictable ways, and the picture is unsettling. Lee suspects that not everyone is telling the truth about what they know—or they have yet to reveal all the lies they’ve hidden from the strangers they married.

Spoiler alert. Good story, but a few obvious misses. Detective work was lacking. First thing confiscated when investigating a murder would be cell phone records and laptop activity. The only reference to those items was by the other characters. Never occurred to the investigators. That was the main issue I had. And Kristen’s lack of ovaries would have been detected during her extensive attempts at solving her fertility issues, so why even throw that in?

This is a book that was, as far as I can ascertain was, written only to see how many twists and turns and surprises can fit in a medium length novel. Cliched? How about this? a full confession of the murderer, with an explanation of the conspiracy involved in the murder, to the police officer at the end of the case. Ridiculous

Gimmickry and yet cliched

I was loving this book and then Andy the daddy , Of Aubrey the little girl whose mother was just murdered. Wants to give her up for adoption, despite the fact she is three years old and the sad and confused because her mommy got taken and now her dad he wants to give her away. Does he want to give her to the grandparents who came and got her right after the mommy was murdered oh no because the Grandpa is a child molester not good enough to raise her, but good enough the baby said well Daddy drinks and thinks about where mommy wet. This is ridiculous this book. I cannot Believe where the author wanted to go with this book. Giving up a child for adoption over the age of one will make that child distrustful and uncertain about him or herself. This made me so angry I stopped reading it. I thought the couple next-door husband was the murderer now sadly they’re going to be the adoptive parents. This book is ridiculous. And he’s an alcoholic. Good luck little Aubrey! I know she is made up but this makes me sad!
