The golden skies, the translucent twilight, the white nights, all hold the promise of youth, of love, of eternal renewal. The war has not yet touched this city of fallen grandeur, or the lives of two sisters, Tatiana and Dasha Metanova, who share a single room in a cramped apartment with their brother and parents. Their world is turned upside down when Hitler's armies attack Russia and begin their unstoppable blitz to Leningrad.

Yet there is light in the darkness. Tatiana meets Alexander, a brave young officer in the Red Army. Strong and self-confident, yet guarding a mysterious and troubled past, he is drawn to Tatiana—and she to him. Starvation, desperation, and fear soon grip their city during the terrible winter of the merciless German siege. Tatiana and Alexander's impossible love threatens to tear the Metanova family apart and expose the dangerous secret Alexander so carefully protects—a secret as devastating as the war itself—as the lovers are swept up in the brutal tides that will change the world and their lives forever.

I absolutely love this story I fell in love with it from the first chapter Paulina is an amazing writer. It would be an honor for me to listen to the other two books read by this narrator also, James Langton did a marvelous job. His voice brought all the characters alive couldn't stop listening. Please once again the next two books of the trilogy would be wonderful. No one should miss listening to this love story. My Grandfathers were in WWll on the US side and I throughly enjoy these stories, they tell how everyone suffered so much and all is for freedom to live and love under God. Thank You!

Please give us the other two books in the series!!

Read this book years ago, was so happy to finally hear the story told. It was gut wrenchingly beautiful. A lovely story full of love, hope, and life. The history of Russia during WWII was told with such vividness, I felt that I was there.

Amazing....

This story is a good one. I would recommend it to a friend (and have). The narrator used English (as in England) accents for the Russians in this book. Considering that the majority of characters are Russian I would think a narrator with appropriate accents could have been found.

I give the narrator <2 stars.

Engrossing story, ridiculous narrator accents

The beginning was interesting, but half way through the book, the protagonists' attitudes of the characters became repetitive and annoying. Tatiana was weak of character and Alexander over-bearing. Couldn't finish the book.

Not as expected.

Interesting story but very sad and depressing and the ending didn’t help much. Every time I listened to this book I felt depressed.

Disappointing ending
