Editorial reviews
In this meeting of the Thalia Kids' Book Club, the prolific writer Walter Dean Myers reads from his historical novel Riot, about the brutal draft riots that took place in New York City in 1863. Host Madeline Cohen interviews Myers about how he came to be a writer, his sometimes troubled childhood, his writing methods, and his research for the book, which included long walks through the city and scouring old newspapers. Afterward, children from the audience act out scenes from the inventive novel, and try their hand at composing similar pieces.
