Surviving the blast is only the beginning.

Dakota Sloane, a tough-as-nails former foster kid, has spent her life running from the past. A man haunted by secrets, Logan Garcia has only one goal: to drink himself into oblivion.

They're two strangers in a bar—until the news reports nuclear detonations in New York City and Washington, D.C. Before they can escape Miami, everything explodes. Buildings collapse and fires rage. As the fallout descends, utter chaos erupts.

Dakota knows of a place to ride out the storm: a safe house deep in the Everglades. But first, they must escape the treacherous city. Uncontrollable fires, unstable buildings, and deadly fallout contamination threaten them at every turn. And Dakota's younger sister is still trapped in the hot zone.

To save her sister, Dakota needs Logan's help, but can she trust this enigmatic stranger? And how far is she willing to go to survive?

For the radiation isn't the only threat. Dakota's past has caught up to her. Someone is hunting her through the radioactive ruins of Miami, and he won't stop until he has her…or they're both dead.

As a teenager, I watched the '80s films 'The Day After', 'Threads' and 'Testament' and had the bejeesus scared out of me. Add to that college classes in nuclear physics and radiation biology and the scenario in this book seems all too real.

This first book in the 'Nuclear Dawn' series starts with the simultaneous nuclear bombings of at least 4 (one of which is discovered before it detonates) US cities. The story centers on Dakota and Logan, two people who have witnessed horrors in their lives before the bombings. How will they deal with their demons from the past and survive the devastation of the present?

The author has written a well-researched plot. The background information for how Dakota and Shay have knowledge
about the bomb and the subsequent fallout rings true. The way the technical information gets weaved into the story seems natural, not just 'info-dumping'. It's a well-done opener to the series. There is one tiny gripe I have; I don't think the book ends in a good spot. I know it's part of a series, but each book should still have a sense of completeness or accomplishment. I didn't get that feeling here.

The book is seeded with some foreshadowing that may reveal who is responsible for the bombings. Is it foreign or domestic terrorists? Or a foreign power intent on destruction? I guess we'll have to stay tuned for that answer.

The narration for this story is excellent. Stacey Glemboski shows her talent for voices. I always knew who was speaking. She gave Dakota's voice the urgency that the writing conveys. Great job!

This genre is not my usual go to genre, I came across this Author by way of a different PA series. I tend to stick to what I know and love. But I am very glad I opened my bubble a bit. Kyla Stones writing and story sucked me in. I thoroughly enjoyed the whole series. And would / have recommended to many in my book circle. I have read / listened to many of her other series and she is now one of my top authors. Thank you!

Great Story! Awesome Post apocalyptic story!

this is an interesting premise (multiple nuclear bombs decimating several prominent US cities), but this book only deals with the Miami one, and only a small group of people. It is a bit slower paced than I would have preferred. But I know it's a series, and I'm definitely jumping right into the next to see how it all works out.

interesting... so far
