In the shadow of a threatening volcano, long-haul trucker Kit Garrido wakes up in her crashed big rig, unable to recall what happened or why she's suddenly in possession of someone's baby. Fiercely independent, she has to admit that perhaps this time she could use a little help.

As the threat of eruption grows, former cop Cullen Landry refuses to leave his cabin in the evacuation area, which is why he's the only one left who can help Kit escape the crumpled cab of her truck. He doesn't want to get tangled up in the mystery of the beautiful woman with an abandoned infant, but when he sees the bullet hole in the windshield and the bloody handprint on the interior, he realizes that he's in this thing, like it or not.

When two armed men with ill intent approach, the race is on to stay alive, discover the truth, and find the baby's missing mother—all while a deadly mountain rains fire from above.

I enjoyed this story so much. I think I've listened to it at least 3 times week far. The character development, the beautiful and disintegrating natural setting. The 2 main protagonists' slow-burn of a quirky romance- I was caught up and into this story all the way! There was enough mystery to keep me guessing. There was enough suspense to keep me engaged, and there was enough depth to keep me caring until the very well done ending. The book was just unput-downable. Thank you again Ms. Mentink.

Fantastic adventure and sweet romance

Excellent book! I really enjoyed it. Action and running from bad guys during a mountain in its eruption…days of danger, with a baby too! Who is after them? Why? Really good! Good narrator.

JUST WOW! Start to finish!

This story is filled with vivid descriptions and exciting action. There characters are interesting and engaging. I really enjoyed the characters versus nature conflict which is not the usual Christian romantic suspense book. This part of the book is 5 stars for me.

The writing that describes how the couple escapes the volcano eruption is extremely good. In fact, it is so good that the other conflict, villains versus heroes, was harder to believe in my opinion. Listening to how hard the couple had to work just to survive the various aspects of the eruption made the criminals’ pursuit unlikely.

I haven’t written a book, but I imagine writers have a lot of problems to solve in the plot. The two plot conflicts seemed to work against one another for me, anyway, but others will likely think that the criminals add an extra exciting layer to the plot. This part of the book is a 4 for me.

The two main characters are shown to complement each other very well. They work through various aspects of their past and their faith together. There are some funny moments and very good writing. Both characters are easy to like and writing supports a good rapport with each other. The two are friends, one wanting more, but solidifying the romance was put off until the very end. This seems typical for Dana Mentink’s books, but this is not usually a pattern I enjoy. The characters are 5 stars for me, but the “non-romantic” reluctant romance part was a 3 for me.

The reader is very good. She portrays the characters’ voices extremely well. I do find myself listening at a faster speed sometimes, though. I’m not sure why because she is truly very good. 5 stars for her.
