The first 15 chapters are all about trying to avoid dinner with the Consort, the prep and, finally, dinner. Attendance includes the Cohort 12, Tain, Helen, Kaylin & Severn. Bellusdeo has invited the Arkon to dinner to placate the Emperor and they get the addition of Lord Emmerian as his guard. When the Consort arrives, she has Ynpharion & only 1 other as guards.
The Consort surprises all by stating she does support the Cohort going through the trial for Lord, partially because of politics with other Barrani houses, but mostly because she wants help with the shadow entity they label ‘the Adversary’ residing in the lower halls. As information is shared at dinner, Kaylin shares her trial experience at the request of the Consort. In analyzing the fallen whose names are held, Kaylin questions whether some who passed and came back were sent back with shadows by the Adversary.
Notable is the Arkon’s visual remembrance of the first war of dragons versus Barrani, with shadow having control of the arcanist killing dragons, and the withdrawal of the tower of the High Halls when the palace around it was destroyed. With current knowledge, there is the distinct possibility that shadow instigated the wars that decimated both populations.
Much strategizing ensues with another attempt made by Sedarias’ brother. Once the Cohort arrives at the High Halls, the traps and tests begin. While the Cohort enters the trial from the beginning, the Consort takes Teela, Severn, Kaylin & Ynpharion through a private passage she has used before. But even that is trapped.
I particularly liked Kaylin’s discussion with Ynpharion about power and politics in Chapter 19. Tension ramps up when the Cohort is divided in their trial. Kaylin et al are joined by Lord Evarrim, then Lord Nightshade in trying to reach the end point of the trial, to meet up with the Cohort for the purpose of facing the Adversary together. The entire ensemble battles on against other houses as Kaylin moves into alternate space to talk to the heart of the tower, then to confront the Adversary. There is resolution (please don’t make me explain) and the surety that the High Hall will be a different residence going forward.
Hvam’s narration was very good.
