Michael Sugrue is a retired police sergeant, former United States Air Force captain, internationally recognized speaker, and internationally bestselling author dedicated to improving the mental health and wellness of first responders, military service members, veterans, and their families. Michael began his career in 1998 as a Security Forces Officer in the United States Air Force, where he specialized in law enforcement, global force protection, anti-terrorism, nuclear security, foreign airfield assessments, and air base ground defense. During his military career, he served in numerous leadership positions, including Flight Leader, Flight Commander, Senior Watch Officer, Chief of Command Post, and Chief of Security Forces. His assignments took him throughout the United States, Europe, the Middle East, and South America. Michael also served as a Security Forces Phoenix Raven (Identifier #1173), one of the Air Force’s elite force protection specialists responsible for securing aircraft and personnel worldwide. He honorably separated from the Air Force in 2004 with the rank of Captain. Following his military service, Michael joined the Walnut Creek Police Department in California, where he served for 14 years in a wide range of assignments, including Patrol Officer, Driver Training Instructor (EVOC), Field Training Officer (FTO), Special Investigations Unit Detective, Undercover California Department of Justice Narcotics Task Force Agent assigned to Contra Costa County, Public Information Officer (PIO), and Patrol Sergeant. In 2014, Michael was awarded the Walnut Creek Police Department Distinguished Service Medal for his heroic, life-saving actions during a fatal officer-involved shooting in 2012. After years of cumulative frontline trauma, he medically retired in 2018. Today, Michael has transformed his personal journey into a mission of service. He is a Peer Volunteer with the West Coast Post Trauma Retreat (WCPR) and serves as an Ambassador for Save A Warrior (SAW). He is internationally recognized as a leading advocate for Post-Traumatic Stress Injury (PTSI) awareness, organizational trauma education, and first responder and military suicide prevention. Through keynote presentations, conferences, and specialized training, he continues to educate audiences around the world on resilience, recovery, and the realities of cumulative trauma. Michael is also featured in the Mission 22 documentary Stigma of Help and the award-winning feature-length documentary Residual: Cumulative Trauma and PTSD in First Responders. In 2022, Michael co-authored the International #1 bestselling book, Relentless Courage: Winning the Battle Against Frontline Trauma, with renowned psychologist Dr. Shauna Springer. Combining Michael’s lived experience with Dr. Springer’s clinical expertise, the book examines the hidden psychological toll of frontline service, confronts the stigma surrounding mental health, and provides a practical roadmap for healing and recovery.
