  • Leadership Or A Ship Leader: The Ships Were Not Just Vessels, They Were Systems - Dr. Angeline Dean
    Apr 3 2026
Dr. Angeline Dean has been called a “life saver” and a “breath of fresh air” for her ability to bring different perspectives to challenging situations. She is an entrepreneur and thought leader who is not afraid to take risks and possesses a keen sense of recognizing and responding to the call for change. Her book Not Just a Slave was an answer to her fourteen-year-old cousin’s question as well as so many other children of melanin-- “Am I just a slave?” This book was submitted for the Coretta Scott King Award in 2013. Yet, little did Dr. Dean comprehend this book and an incident while teaching would be the tools to transcend her thinking and navigate her journey as a disruptor and catalyst for change. In her quest for a metamorphic transformation, she recognized that power lies in the shaping of mindsets - identity formation. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Social Science and a Master’s degree from John S. Watson School of Public Policy at Thomas Edison University where she studied Community/Economic Development in her bid to continue to be effective and innovative. In May of 2022, Angeline obtained her Ph.D. from Rowan University in Access, Success, and Equity in Urban Education where she was the first to be chosen specifically due to her justice, civic, and organizing skillset. She is an Unapologetic DisruptHer. Presently, Dr. Angeline Dean serves as an adjunct professor at Rowan University and teaches courses in Urban Education and Disability Studies, while teaching Social Justice courses at Southern New Hampshire University. At Hofstra University she combined a social justice and civics framework to the memoir course she taught to criminal justice and criminology majors. She has published in The Journal of Critical Thought and Praxis, Genealogy, and The Community Literacy Journal along with receiving many awards including her latest Trailblazer award.
