A narrative and visual exploration of humanity’s age-old search for and fixation with extraterrestrials.

First Contact explores the ancient idea—and epic quest to prove—that we are not alone in the universe. Presented in a heavily illustrated cabinet of curiosities format, the book explores our fascination with aliens from early history to present day, including chapters on alien conspiracy theories, aliens in science fiction, the actual science behind our search for aliens, and what happens if and when they come…or, if we are in fact descended from them.

Each chapter is filled with bite-sized explainers and longer sections on meatier topics such as habitable zones, xenolinguistics, and UFO religions. Smaller topics include alien abductions, ancient astronauts, exodinosaurs, Project Cyclops, and the Great Moon Hoax.

This week I'm talking to Allan Lavigne about his UFO experiences.

Bio

Allan Lavigne is a former investigator for the Aerial Phenomenon Research Organization from 1974-1980. He went on to a two-pronged career path spanning more than 45 years, as both a Physical Security Specialist and Intelligence Analyst in the private sector, working closely with the Joint Terrorist Task Force, FBI and Homeland Security. He is also an entertainment artist. His early work can be seen in the 1979 documentary UFOs are Real for which A.P.R.O. was the sole technical advisor.

Allan went on to create Make-up Special Effects appliances, masks, and props for NBC’s Jack Web's TV series Project UFO for two seasons.

He won the DC Comics Industry Award for his Arkham Asylum Batman costume.

In more recent years, Allan has done work for Sony Pictures on Iron Man 1 and 2, Marvel Entertainment, Disney, Lucas Films and others. There are permanent exhibits of his work at the San Francisco Cartoon Art Museum, and San Diego Comic-Con Museum in San Diego's Balboa Park.

In this episode, I talk about one of Britain’s most fascinating UFO mysteries: the Berwyn Mountains UFO incident of 23 January 1974, often called the Welsh Roswell. On a cold winter night in North Wales, residents near Llandrillo and Bala reported a huge bang, a tremor, and strange lights over the Berwyn range. But what makes the case so compelling is what some witnesses said they saw on the mountain itself.

I explore the reports of a bright red light on the hillside, described by witnesses as “coal-fire red,” a “large perfect circle,” and “like a big bonfire.” Some accounts also spoke of white lights moving nearby and of the glow changing in intensity and colour. District nurse Pat Evans is closely associated with seeing a large glowing object on the mountain after driving toward the scene, believing there had been a crash. Other witnesses described the area as pulsating with strange light, adding to the enduring mystery of what happened in the Berwyns that night.

Was it a crashed UFO? A military recovery? Or something even stranger? In this episode, I focus on the witness testimony, the atmosphere of the night, and why the Berwyn Mountains incident remains a fascinating case in UK UFO history.

The Rendlesham Forest Incident of December 1980, is considered by far the most significant event in UFO history. It was also a unique military-related event, having taken place in Rendlesham Forest just outside the twin bases of RAF Bentwaters and RAF Woodbridge in Suffolk, England – both of which had been transferred to the United States Air Force in 1951 by the British MOD (Ministry of Defence), becoming one of the largest and most important NATO complexes in Europe during the Cold War.

The account given in this book is that of James W. Penniston, a Staff Sergeant at the time of the incident, who was the primary witness who led the investigation in the beginning and had ‘Top-Secret clearance’ – one of only eight people with Top-Secret clearance working Security at the twin bases. His credibility and honesty were highly respected throughout his years in the USAF. Jim Penniston has teamed-up with author Gary Osborn to present the definitive account of the Rendlesham Incident and the aftermath of events, just as he witnessed and experienced them from the incident itself, which began during the early morning hours of Boxing Day, December 26, 1980 up to April 2014.

Gary is an author, independent researcher, and expert in ancient symbolism. He has studied the Giza plateau and the possibility that ancient monuments contain hidden layers of meaning.

He explores the correspondence between binary code coordinates associated with Staff Sergeant Jim Penniston’s 1980 Rendlesham Forest encounter and notable points on the Giza Plateau. He also studies potential links between mathematics, mythology, and megalithic architecture, and what these connections could suggest about our understanding of the ancient world.

In this episode I am reading from Samantha Leifker's book 'Born Awakened: An Otherworldly True Story'

They intervened in my life before I could even speak, and they've guided me ever since. I was born and raised in a poltergeist house, where they trained me in spiritual warfare. I was taken, I was tested, I was shown, and it has only just begun.

From angels to greys to UFOs, every encounter I've had until now is detailed in this book, and I hold nothing back. The first thirty years of my life have been filled with paranormal events, out-of-body experiences, meetings with the dead, and contact with many forms of NHI. Extrasensory perception appears to be a result of my exposure to the supernatural, and so do the wild synchronicities that flood my life.

We are spiritual beings not confined to the physical, and we have the ability to journey into realms that conventional thinking denies.
