Failing my people is not an option and I'll do whatever is needed to make sure that doesn't happen, that is until she runs into my arms. Now the universe be damned because I will sacrifice them all to keep her safe. My very soul reaches for her, but no matter how hard I fight to get to her. My Amouri is just out of reach. Will she ever come to terms with the things that have been forced upon her? Will she finally see the male that is standing right in front of her? Or will my fears push her away?
Tessa
I closed my eyes in one world only to open them in another. Terrified and disoriented, I flee, only to find myself trapped in an enormous embrace of the universe's largest arms. Now I am in a world I don't understand, surrounded by others who are leery of their master's new pet. He says all the right words, but am I brave enough to let go of the past and trust what he says is true? Can I turn my back on all that I knew just because I am here now? Or will the creatures hunting them all take my choices away?
Contains mature themes.

ZoD gives us a different dynamic. He’s essentially DaR’s equal in another territory, but instead of sons, he’s surrounded by 3 daughters and 1 son. That shift creates such a fun emotional contrast while still keeping the same core themes of loyalty, devotion, protection, and love.
Jennifer’s Appalachian roots shine throughout her writing. The deep family bonds, Southern humor, stubborn loyalty, and “bless your heart” sass make these characters feel alive in a way that sets this series apart from many alien romances. These books have action, humor, emotional depth, and warriors who may look terrifying, but are complete teddy bears for their women and families.
The audiobook narration is perfection. Tor Thom brings that deep commanding baritone that these alien warriors require, while Emily Sutton-Smith delivers the perfect balance of Southern sass, heart, and humor. Honestly, I cannot imagine anyone else voicing this world. Highly recommended for readers who love: found family trope with a main course of protective alien warriors with a side of Southern Sass.

Main Characters and Plot Overview
ZoD is the thirteenth book in the Darverius, House of DaR series and follows ZoD, a powerful warrior whose primary focus has always been protecting his people. Duty drives nearly every decision he makes until Tessa unexpectedly enters his life. Tessa’s situation is far more complicated than simply finding herself in a new place. She literally closes her eyes in one world and wakes in another, leaving her frightened, confused, and struggling to understand what has happened to her.
Their relationship develops slowly because Tessa does not immediately trust ZoD or the strange alien world around her. Many of the people surrounding ZoD view her with suspicion, and Tessa carries emotional wounds that make it difficult for her to believe she is truly safe. What makes this story engaging is that ZoD is not trying to win over a woman who is merely hesitant. He is trying to help someone who has had her entire reality ripped away from her. The romance unfolds alongside ongoing dangers facing the House of DaR, creating tension between ZoD’s responsibilities and his overwhelming desire to protect his Amouri.
Highlights and Limitations
One of the strongest aspects of this book is the emotional contrast between the main characters. ZoD is physically intimidating and one of the most formidable males in the series, yet much of the story shows his patience and gentleness with Tessa. Rather than forcing the relationship forward, he spends much of the book proving through actions that she can trust him. The scenes where Tessa questions her new reality and struggles with fear felt believable given the circumstances.
I also enjoyed how the book balanced romance with the larger House of DaR storyline. The external threats never disappear, and there is a constant feeling that the characters are being hunted or watched. That danger helps keep the pacing moving even during the relationship-focused sections. The villains in this book are worm-like slug monsters that can’t be killed and they plant their babies inside a host body and thousands of them eat their way out. Definitely not a good way to die. Not to mention the fact that the royals of that species are sentient.
The biggest limitation is that this is a late entry in a long-running series. While the romance itself can be followed, readers who have not spent time with previous House of DaR books may miss some of the emotional significance of recurring characters and ongoing conflicts. The book also leans heavily into emotional trauma and recovery, which may feel slower to readers looking primarily for action.
Narration
Emily Sutton-Smith and Tor Thom continue to be an excellent pairing for this series. Tor Thom’s deep, commanding voice is a natural fit for ZoD. He captures both the warrior’s strength and the softer emotions that emerge whenever Tessa is involved. His performance helps sell ZoD as a protective hero rather than simply a giant alien warrior.
Emily Sutton-Smith does a great job portraying Tessa’s fear, confusion, and gradual growth in confidence. Her emotional delivery makes Tessa’s internal struggles feel authentic, especially during moments when she questions whether she can trust the people around her. Together, the narrators create strong chemistry that enhances the romance and makes the dual point-of-view structure easy to follow.
Final Thoughts
ZoD delivers an emotional science fiction romance built around trust, healing, and unwavering devotion. The relationship between ZoD and Tessa develops at a satisfying pace because Tessa’s fears are treated as legitimate obstacles rather than inconveniences. ZoD’s fierce protectiveness, combined with his patience, makes him an easy hero to root for.
For fans of the House of DaR series, this installment adds another memorable couple while continuing the larger story of the Darverius universe. If you enjoy possessive yet caring alien heroes, emotionally wounded heroines, and strong audiobook performances, ZoD is well worth the listen.
