Smedley D. Butler (1881–1940), the most decorated officer in U.S. military history, including two Medals of Honor, wrote a searing critique in War is a Racket. Drawing from his service in conflicts from the Spanish-American War to World War I, he exposed how wars enriched corporations, bankers, and industrialists while soldiers and civilians bore the devastating costs. With unflinching candor, Butler revealed the profiteering motives behind global conflicts, delivering a timeless call for peace.

This audiobook vividly captures Butler’s incisive essay, perfect for listeners seeking a concise, powerful perspective on war’s economic drivers. The narration conveys the passion of Butler, whose legacy as a warrior turned truth-teller endures. Plunge into this compelling listen and uncover the stark realities of war through the experience and wisdom of a legendary Marine.

The author having earned two congressional medals of honor has earned his right to be heard. His insights are 100% true. Those who die in war are not those who profit from it. Our current society of corrupt politicians who enrich themselves with insider trading is nothing new, but to ensure peace in the future, war profiteering needs to be controlled. While I may nor agree with his solutions, he is absolutely correct that the interests of the country must be aligned with those who will actually do the fighting.
