In her senior year of college, asha bandele and a group of other writers went to a prison to read their works for a Black History Month program. There, she met Rashid, a man who was serving 20 to life for murder, a man who spoke softly and wisely, a man who would become asha’s soul mate. This is her account of a relationship that has thrived despite terrific odds.

Critic reviews

“This is a romantic but realistic story, told with a directness and honesty that makes us know that, however impossible the problems asha and Rashid face, we can question neither her motives nor sanity.” ( Booklist)

Not only the author was great at keeping me focused on the story and wanting more but the narrator was amazing too. The narrator made me feel every bit of the story. I've never tried the audible version of books before and it was definitely a perfect choice. loved every minute of it. thank you.

As a prison wife for the long haul, I appreciate hearing the author's story. It normalized my feelings and experiences. There aren't many resources for us.

This is also a good one for women who have experienced childhood trauma. The author put into words experiences that I could not.

The performance was lively and emotional. The writing is poetic.

I am not alone...

I read the hard copy as I listened to the audiobook . The first sentence of the first page of the first chapter, the first words written in the first paragraph, the first words I read we're all it took to hook me. and I couldn't stop reading it until I reach the end. I dream of writing like this.

Told with great excellence!
