Dr. Jefferson Wright was a tenured professor at Columbia University's School of Law before his fall from grace by touting the necessity of a preemptive nuclear strike to prevent World War III. For the years leading up to the end of the world, Dr. Wright vocalized his concerns to any outlet that would listen. Dr. Wright vanished without a trace one month before the first warhead detonated. Over the ensuing weeks, famed artifacts from American history began mysteriously disappearing. Most notably, the night before the world's end, the Constitution of the United States was reported missing by the National Archives.

When the haze cleared along the Eastern Seaboard and the apocalypse survivors emerged into the barren post-war wasteland, a secretive and eccentric individual known only as The Magistrate rose to prominence among the elite of the new Union. He shared grand visions of a return to America’s pre-war glory, uncorrupted by the perversions and weaknesses that had caused the fall of the world’s mightiest nation. He promised reconstruction, progress, and prosperity, powered by a novel and unknown fuel source of his creation.
