"I did not go to Nicaragua intending to write a book, or, indeed, to write at all: but my encounter with the place affected me so deeply that in the end I had no choice." So notes Salman Rushdie in his first work of nonfiction, a book as imaginative and meaningful as his acclaimed novels. In The Jaguar Smile, Rushdie paints a brilliantly sharp and haunting portrait of the people, the politics, the terrain, and the poetry of "a country in which the ancient, opposing forces of creation and destruction were in violent collision".

Recounting his travels there in 1986, in the midst of America's behind-the-scenes war against the Sandinistas, Rushdie reveals a nation resounding to the clashes between government and individuals, history and morality.

This is the first book by Salman Rushdie that I’ve ever listened to. It was very well done. It was from the Sandinistas point of view, which made it interesting as I am from the US. We’re heading down to Nicaragua this month and I thought it would be interesting to hear, what had happened down there. I would recommend this book and I’m going to listen to Satanic Verses next.

being a Nicaraguan myself, and being born in the most of our beautiful Sandinista Revolution is account is as true as it is melodic. The turbulent years fill with pride and bravery of a tiny country defiant of the almighty Yankee imperialism is accounted by the author with and extraordinary lucidity. I'm sure it will be as engaging as it was for me, knowing all the names and places, and it will be for anybody who has not set foot in Nicaragua and heard of our revolution. this book and this narration is simply Amazing!
