A lovely widow plans to marry a French count in this historical romance by bestselling author Marion Chesney

It was true. The lovely young widow Lady Charteris - Delphine to her friends - had agreed to abide by her parents' wishes and marry the Comte Saint-Pierre. Delphine's parents had long since died in the Terror, but when she learned of their wishes for her, she believed it her duty to respect their wishes. Delphine would marry, but it would be a marriage in name only.

But when Delphine saw Jules Saint-Pierre, she got the shock of her life: he was the same man she had seen juggling in the streets at a local fair. What was he doing as the Comte Saint-Pierre? Was he posing? Had she made some terrible mistake?

The heroine was petty, pushy, and annoyingly contradictory in her opinions. She was as critical as those she judged unfair pompous or condescending, although she was often benevolent. Her constant rudeness made her a poor choice for a love interest.

The narrator was excellent, except the first half of the story she mispronounced the word Count as Cunt - in latter half, her pronunciation of Count rhymed with Aunt , but far better than the previous mispronunciation.

It passed time, pleasant fitting reading except for the fore-mentioned point, interesting parts and decent storyline, just less to like or be impressed by Lady Delphine and initially the Count.

Not What Expected, a difficult main character

It had the best narrator although it was the first time I had heard her. The hero had a profound impact on the other characters. Without giving anything away I will stop here, except to say you will be delighted with th is story.

Lovely

I have read or listened to many of the author’s books over the years, with varying degrees of pleasure. Some of her books have kind of a weird, underlying tone that for me didn’t work. But this book is to me her best. The story is interesting and believable. The h and h likable. The villains not too villainous. And in the end, it all works out for the best. And the narration is absolutely spot on. There were some “warm” spots, but I skipped over those and of course nothing was lacking in translation. Overall, highly recommend this best of the best of Ms. Beaton.
