The Honourable Catherine Elford - Kitty - is presented with an awful choice. Either she is cast off, penniless, by her stepbrother, or she marries the handsome Earl of Ledbury, who would be perfect were he not a serial womaniser. Ledbury has only ever courted other men’s wives and does not want a wife of his own. However, Kitty’s generous dowry, which will keep him from selling his beloved racehorses, proves too tempting.

Kitty believes her only chance of survival is to make her head rule her heart. For his part, Ledbury has spotted a spark in Kitty and sets out to woo her. But as Kitty begins to succumb to his seduction, Ledbury’s past starts to catch up with them.

I started out adoring the writing, the characters, and was so excited by finding a new author to start reading everything she wrote, but at chapter 18 the story became something else, and a new plot was added especially with the introduction of Sir Geoffrey, and the book from my point of view was ruined. But with about 80% of the book being so well written I can’t discount the power of the writer. Holloway is wonderful, but I suppose she doesn’t think a romance just culminating in love is enough. My belief is when the story is about a relationship between a man and woman it should stay in that register. If the story is meant to be an adventure with romance between the main characters. It should start with that. Adding a plot at the end took me out of the relationship and the ending became inauthentic.

Great writing and character development

I love the story of the reformed rake. This was a thoroughly binge-worthy story, and I'm adding Matt Addis to my list of favorite narrators.

Loved the narration

Fans of Georgette Heyer will enjoy this book as the Earl of Ledbury is every bit the lovable rogue as, say, Jasper Damerel (Venetia), and his redemption arch as he falls in love with his wife is quite satisfying. Kitty is a very realistic character: an immensely practical young woman who is hampered by all the insecurities you would expect for someone who married an infamous rake. And, as always, there is an enjoyable cast of supporting characters. Especially Lord Inglesham, Ledbury’s best friend. I will say, the plot devices that keep Ledbury and Kitty apart do become tedious about 75% of the way through. Even so, I found the book humorous and enjoyable.

This is a closed door romance but the MMC is a rake and the couple is married so there is quite a lot of innuendo.

And, as always, Matt Addis is an exceptional narrator!

Enjoyed Quite A Lot

This is a well-written story that is a cut above most Regency romances. The character development is well-done. Also, Matt Addis is the perfect narrator, and does an excellent job portraying the range of emotions the characters experience.

Excellent book!
