A woman seeks love and the fulfillment of her essential nature outside of her stuffy, middle-class marriage. Although this book shocked the readers of 1899, it ultimately paved the way for the modern novel.

This book is masterful- heart-breakingly relevant still today and incredibly well written. I actually love it so much that I have a tattoo of the scene from chapter 10 (no spoilers, but Robert's insight into Edna's state of mind will make your heart ache for her). The disregard for the way of society and arguably for morality in general is such an intriguing insight into what women of society's lives could be at the turn of the century. My only qualm with this performance is that Robert is French Creole, yet the narrator pronounces his name with the hard t at the end, instead of the French pronunciation. Aside from that, I have no complaints with this performance of my favorite piece of literature.
