A revelatory look at the complex inner world of one of the twentieth century’s most beloved theatrical composers

Stephen Sondheim (1930-2021) was a towering figure in American musical theater. Celebrated for such iconic Broadway shows as Company, Sweeney Todd, and Into the Woods, his accolades include eight Tony Awards, multiple Grammy Awards, an Academy Award, and a Pulitzer Prize. In this intimate biography, Daniel Okrent follows Sondheim through the tumult of his upbringing and his parents’ divorce, his life-changing relationship with Oscar Hammerstein II and subsequent immersion in musical theater, and his rise to fame as both a lyricist and composer.

Okrent shines new light on Sondheim’s complicated emotional life, wavering self-confidence, and alcoholism, drawing on the artist’s intimate correspondence with such notable figures as Hal Prince, Leonard Bernstein, and Arthur Laurents; exclusive interviews with his close friends and collaborators, including James Lapine and John Weidman; and Sondheim’s own oral history, which remained closed until his death. He also reveals a previously unknown (and crucial) aspect of the infamous letter from Sondheim’s mother that made him believe she regretted his birth. As Okrent explores the ways Sondheim’s music and lyrics express the inner man, he shows us a life that was defined by two parallel arcs: the movement from alienation to connection, and from ambivalence to resolution.

I thought it was a bit rambling. Lots of interesting stories, insights, and information though.

Sondheim’s reported sensitivity and propensity to get angry.

Meh reading of a good book about a great subject

The author loves his subject but is subjective nonetheless about Sondheim's genius and his failings, personally and professionally . I love being a fly on the wall particularly into the world occupied by Sondheim and his brilliantly creative colleagues. I was engaged from start to finish. A hell of a book from LA to San Francisco on highway 5. My only wish was that we could have heard some of the songs discussed which would have made for a richer experience

If you love Sondheim you'll love this book

I read almost exclusively nonfiction and have noticed biographies getting longer and longer. I found this book a sufficiently detailed look at his personal life as well as a knowledgeable examination of the great shows. The author’s insights into how Sondheim structured and wrote the shows as well as the history of their creation very perceptive and made me go back and watch videos/movies so I could understand his genius better. I can’t imagine anyone who likes Broadway, musical theater or Sondheim not loving this book. Beautifully read by the author, bravo!!!

Balanced examination of the personal and professional

This biography is a clearly written, chronological accounting of Sondheim's life and work, but would have been stronger with more examples from Sondheim's plays, and less emphasis on his mommy issues and petty vendettas.

Short, but not so Sweet
