The story was alright. A little heavy handed on the moral story, but so is most Trek. Riker did a good job with the reading, his voice is perfect for audiobooks. It starts very fast, I had to double check that I didn’t miss a chapter! Just throws you into the story like an episode of the show, but without the visual cues and familiarity. Which may be good for some long time fans and speed readers, but I imagine very challenging for someone new to Star Trek to understand the characters and setting. I suggest this if you have a few hour long drive and want to pass the time without starting a full size novel. Very predictable plot and characters, and the ended felt a little rushed as well. But the middle has some great TNG moments if you are a fan.

Always enjoy the Star Trek novels. I like how Frakes can voice all the characters without overdoing, for example example, Captain Picard's British accent, but we sense the same authority and elegance from the actor we know.

The story itself was too short I suspect because this was an older book that was originally on audio tape that couldn’t take a longer story

Jonathan frakes nailed the storytelling

Jonathan Frakes is not a voice actor, and his voice is too distinctive and distracting when he is (poorly) imitating voices that are so well-known. It's a nice voice, just not one that works in this situation in my opinion.

And this is one of the lesser attempts at STNG fiction. Surprisingly, Tim Russ is a good narrator who subtly imitates the characters' voices. I'm listening to Genesis Wave and although it's not great literature it is enjoyable.

Just not really very good
