Some secrets are never meant to see the light of day.

Miss Lizette Kent's life is in shambles. Not only did her mother just pass away, but she has been left without the means to provide for herself. While she is contemplating her future, she encounters an unexpected and vexing man: Tristan Westcott, a man that mistakenly seems to believe that she is the daughter of an earl, despite her insistence that she is not.

Tristan does not have time for games, but Lady Lizette is playing a maddening one with him. Lord Ashington assigned him to retrieve his granddaughter so that she may take her rightful place in Society. When their first meeting goes awry, he is forced to wait until she accepts the truth and allows him to escort her to London.

As two proud hearts negotiate a ceasefire, they reluctantly discover that they enjoy the other's company and begin to rely on one another. But as truths are unraveled, Lizette realizes that her future—and her heart—are in danger of being shattered.

Contains mature themes.

I have to agree with the other reviewers for this book…the narrator ruined it. I am disappointed to see that she narrates the rest of the series. The storyline was engaging. It has a few gag worthy syrupy moments but was overall well done. I struggle to discern if it was the narrator that caused me to not enjoy the storyline wholly. The narrator definitely missed great opportunities to bring out the humor in the areas it was clearly meant to be added.

Good story, horrible narration

I don’t typically leave negative reviews, because I truly believe most people are doing their best. However, in this case, the narration made it very difficult to enjoy the audiobook.

I finished the book at 1.2x speed simply to move through it more quickly. The narrator’s delivery felt very flat, with little variation in tone between characters. There were moments where distinct voices or accents—such as with the modiste—could have added depth, but those opportunities were missed. At times, the narration even felt somewhat artificial, which made it harder to stay immersed in the story.

Additionally, the vocal quality came across as quite nasal, and there were moments where the pacing and breath control were distracting. I don’t say this lightly, as I understand how challenging narration can be.

As for the story itself, it was decent—though not my favorite from Laura Beers, who is normally one of my go-to authors. I chose to finish it because of my appreciation for her work, but the narration ultimately made this listening experience less enjoyable than I had hoped.

Moving forward, I’ll likely explore other authors for a bit before returning to Laura Beers—and I would personally avoid this narrator in future audiobooks.

Here's hoping that Jennifer Smith improves in her narration.

The narrator was not very good, and it took away from the story. The story itself felt very AI which was disappointing because I used to appreciate Laura Beers.
The story itself had a decent storyline but the narrator made it very hard to complete. She made everything about the story feel very juvenile.

Disappointing and very hard to complete.

Not Bad. Lots of secrets, lies and deceit. The story is very confusing until the very end.

Almost DNF. Story was ok but weird plot twists that, for me, didn't work. I did like Tristan's arc. But the narration is what almost caused me to not finish - the weirdest sing-song emphasis and pacing. Almost like she randomly picked the word to emphasize in a sentence rather than the word that should have been emphasized. There are computer generated narration that's better at guessing.

Meh story, terrible narrator
