Old enough to be used

Young enough to be broken

Sassinak was 12 when the raiders came. That made her just the right age: old enough to be used, young enough to be broken. Or so the slavers thought. But Sassy turned out to be a little different from your typical slave girl. Maybe it was her unusual physical strength.

Maybe it was her friendship with the captured Fleet crewman. Maybe it was her spirit. Whatever it was, it wouldn’t let her resign herself to the life of a slave. She bided her time, watched for her moment. Finally it came, and she escaped.

But that was only the beginning for Sassinak. Now she’s a Fleet Captain with a pirate-chasing ship of her own, and only one regret in her life: not enough pirates.

The narrator, at first, was slightly robotic in her reading, but it was just that her voice has a burr to it, which ended up fitting well with Sassinak's character. The narrator was also able to affect several different voices for the various characters within the book. The reading was also quite seamless, nearly totally immersing me in the story.

Sassinak's story takes her from being a happy child in a young colony, to being a slave, an academy cadet, a junior officer, and finally a commander of her own ship. Throughout her lifetime, she does her best to be an example of fairness to all who are part of the federation and the fleet, working against long held prejudices against certain humanoid and alien species. She has lost family, both blood and chosen family, but will not let anything stop her from her goal of finding and terminating the pirate organization that stole her and countless othes from colony worlds. Her journey has many successes and failures, and the story ends well on its own, but also continues in the next book, 'The Death of Sleep'.

Definitely dated, but very enjoyable sci-fi story

I hope more of this series gets to audible. This is not YA though it would be appropriate for older teens. More story than sci-fi great complex problems and characters
