Written as a narrative to my daughter, I wanted her to have the whole story. Where she came from. Why I placed her for adoption. And how, for the next 18 years, I hovered on the edges of her family, granted access by her generous parents, but always wanting more. More for her, and more for me.

I am not ready, not able, to raise you.
Ten years too early, I need time to grow up.

To offer you, I have love.
And nothing else.

You need more than I have to give,
Unless I give you up.

To parents who are ready, waiting, to raise you.
Ten years wanting, with a ready home.

Parents who have love,
And everything else, too.

If I do it,
If I break my own heart to spare yours,
Will it work?
Will you be happier, healthier this way?

And will I ever be okay again?

This bare bones memoir tells the story of a kinship adoption from the perspective of a birthmother. It will break your heart, then heal it, with new perspectives on adoption, openness, and the complex ways we define family.

As a fellow birth mom, I feel this and appreciate your ability to write about your truth and experiences in bringing your daughter into the world. Though we both have some different circumstances and viewpoints about adoption and some similar topics, you described your feelings throughout your journey and made very mature decisions for your child. Well written and well read - I prefer hearing the author narrate their own writing to get the true meaning and emotion behind their words. Wishing you, Katarina and your extended family all the best in your future!

Thanks for sharing your truth

An exceptionally beautiful story possibly meant for a niche audience but will charm any reader. Yes, this is one birthmom's story that will undoubtedly help other birthmom's choosing to give up their child for adoption as well as comfort adopted children looking for answers. Answers may or may not be the right word. But I hope you understand what I'm trying to say. This book would be great for those readers. But this book is great for all readers. It's full of kind messages, true heartfelt emotions, painful heartache. It's a journey and it takes you on a tour of emotions. It warmed my heart. It made me laugh and cry. It shows us what is possible when we're open and honest with each other.

The author is the reader and she does a wonderful job sharing her story.

A heartfelt journey. A wonderful read.
