What if understanding isn’t the problem—being heard is?

Real Words With Sam tells the true story of a father who, after two decades, discovers that his autistic son has been fully aware, perceptive, and engaged all along. Through spelled communication, Sam’s inner voice emerges, revealing insight, humor, and emotional depth that challenge long-standing assumptions about disability and intelligence. What many experts labeled as “behaviors” and a “learning disorder” is actually apraxia—a condition affecting output, not input or understanding.

Father and son move beyond managing autism toward building a relationship rooted in mutual respect and curiosity. Deeply vulnerable, raw, and humble, this is both an intimate father-son story and an invitation to rethink how we define communication, competence, and connection—and to ask how many other voices may be waiting to be heard.

Far from a dry, clinical assessment of therapies available for autistic children, Real Words with Sam grabbed my attention from the start with its honest admission of skepticism. It then kept me engaged through its compelling rhythm and stark, memorable vignettes from the lives of Sam and his family.

Additionally, while authors often do a poor job narrating their own work—frequently lacking breath control or proper pacing—that is happily not the case here. Brad Britton’s narration makes for a thoroughly satisfying listening experience.
