From two leaders of the FIRE (Financial Independence, Retire Early) movement, a bold, contrarian guide to retiring at any age, with a reproducible formula to financial independence

A bull***t-free guide to growing your wealth, retiring early, and living life on your own terms

Kristy Shen retired with a million dollars at the age of thirty-one, and she did it without hitting a home run on the stock market, starting the next Snapchat in her garage, or investing in hot real estate. Learn how to cut down on spending without decreasing your quality of life, build a million-dollar portfolio, fortify your investments to survive bear markets and black-swan events, and use the 4 percent rule and the Yield Shield--so you can quit the rat race forever. Not everyone can become an entrepreneur or a real estate baron; the rest of us need Shen's mathematically proven approach to retire decades before sixty-five.

*Includes a PDF of detailed charts, graphs, formulas, illustrated strategies, and the complete appendices from the book, to help reach financial independence and retire early.

Kristy Shen sounds unnatural reading this, but the book's content is interesting + helpful.

She sounds robotic at times, separating the syllables of words in awkward ways. She also has a slight lisp, which personally wasn't an issue but my SO noticed it immediately and couldn't take the audio seriously. Therefore, people should just make sure to keep this in mind.

For the content, some of it is really good (investment ideas with exact tickers and discussing the 4% rule) other times it is not applicable to me (like $500K+ homes) but the general idea still is. Another commenter mentions she says buying a home after 10 years is still a wash. However, they failed to mention how she discusses the rent vs home cost ratio and you need to keep that in mind. I forget the exact percentages but if rent is X% more than mortgage, it's better to buy a home. This is dependent on where you are living and house cost vs rent cost, of course. For her, a home where she was living was a bad deal, and this may or may not be applicable to you.

This book also taught me about capital gains harvesting, something I never thought about before. Just selling and immediately buying back a stock if you're in the 0% capital gains threshold ($40K for single as of now). I've known about wash sales and tax loss harvesting, but for some reason never learned this one. Also, Roth conversion ladders were a nice thing to mention and helpful for me to get a better grasp on them.

She also talks about several different retirement options depending on country and career. While not applicable to me, I think it's good information to put in to give everyone a more worldly view on retirement.

helpful content; author should stick to writing

Kristy did a good job of detailing how she manages her money. She also points out there are myriad ways to become a millionaire. I don’t agree with everything in the book and she tells us that’s ok. It made me think and I’m glad she took the time to write the book. Thanks Kristy.

I like how she goes into depth how you can use the tax shelters and deferred to help alleviate and increase your chances of becoming a financially independent. Also, breaking down the different types of millionaires ones lifestyle can attend to from optimizers, hustlers, and investors. Overall this was a really great breakdown of the step by step on how you to can implement the strategies of the wealthy.
