I guess I'm one of the lucky ones.

When the asteroid hits and the world falls apart, I'm seventeen, and my dad buys us a place in an underground bunker. We're supposed to be safe down there, but we're not. Gradually, I lose everything until all I have left is a bewildering relationship with a stoic, unknowable man.

As one of the guards in the bunker, Grant has lurked in the background of my life for years, teaching me to defend myself, making sure I'm safe, and infuriating me by treating me like a sheltered princess in a tower. I don't even know if he likes me, even after we end up in bed together. All I know is that he's always there beside me—during the bleak half-life of the bunker and the hostile, unfamiliar world we discover when we finally come out of lockdown.

Maybe one day he'll open up. Let down his walls. And maybe eventually our days can be about more than surviving... Maybe I am one of the lucky ones, but right now all I have left in the world is him.

It was a good book and I listened all in one sitting. The only difference between this one and the other ones from Claire Kent, is that I couldn't bring myself to like the fmc this time.
She had her good moments, her being whiny, sheltered and constantly assuming stuff out of nowhere was absolutely believable considering her life before the asteroid and her age, but I still found myself getting frustrated or tired of her at times. Grant was so much better!
overall not a bad read, but I wouldn't re-read, if that makes sense.

Still a really good book 📚

Love the series and this story was excellent. Perfect angst and heat and genuine character chemistry- which is hard with two very reserved characters. Narrator does a fantastic job- doesn’t just read but acts it out as she reads. It can make or break an audiobook, and her skills really added to it.

Story and Narration excellent!

I enjoyed the author’s post-asteroid romance better in this book because there’s more apocalypse story to go with the formula romance between the older, strong, silent warrior man and the younger woman he’d do anything to protect… except have adult communication with about their situation.

Contrary to the cover and summary, this is a closed door apocalypse where, aside from the death of one good guy with a name and dialogue (to bring home the hardship of the new world), there’s only nameless redshirt death against enemy gangs who are likewise nameless and voiceless. That’s okay, though, because it’s all about the romance.

I enjoyed Olivia and Grant’s story, although it felt like things ran long after the big battle with an HEA delayed simply because of their failure to communicate.

Closed door apocalypse, open door sex
