When the seventh child of the Peace family, named Perfect, turns eight, her mother, Emma Jean, tells her bewildered daughter, "You was born a boy. I made you a girl. But that ain't what you was supposed to be. So from now on, you gon' be a boy. It'll be a little strange at first, but you'll get used to it, and this'll be over after while."

From this point forward, his life becomes a bizarre kaleidoscope of events. Meanwhile, the Peace family is forced to question everything they thought they knew about gender, sexuality, unconditional love, and fulfillment.

When you listen to as many books as I do, the bar for what a great book keeps creeping higher and higher. For me a great book must have:
A good story that keeps your mind from drifting off and one that progress at a good pace
Well developed believable characters
Writing that engages the senses
Dialogue that is purposeful to the plot
Perhaps most importantly, a profound imprint on the reader that lingers with you after the book has ended.

This book was all those things for me. Great job Daniel Black!

This is a great story. There are many well developed characters, and it tells a very strange story that is at times very hard to take in. I loved it, and if you don't mind a large amount of of characters, and a very long story. Which in my opinion needed time to tell, you too will enjoy this book.

raised as a girl???

This was an amazing book that I could not stop listening too! It sends you through all the emotions and truly show what it was like to live in this time. My heart broke, it cried but it felt elated when finally Peace or Paul was able to find their happiness!

Peace!! So much Peace
