I infiltrated a rival fae court to hunt my enemy. I didn’t mean to stab their golden-eyed king.

Disguised as a recruit, I cross into the wasteland swamp, searching for the rebels who murdered my sister. But instead of a crumbling outpost, I find a glittering court cloaked in illusion, where brutal trials bind warriors to magical beasts. Unfortunately, the first person my dagger sinks into is their infuriatingly gorgeous king. Instead of seeking revenge, Trewyn smirks, as if getting stabbed was just flirting. When he assumes I’m here to enter the Rite of Bonds, I let him believe it.

If I fail the bonding trials, I’ll be exiled before I uncover the truth. If I succeed, I risk becoming what my kingdom fears most, an untamed magic-wielder dangerously loyal to the wrong side. My court raised me to see the rebels as traitors. Now, I worry I’ll willingly bleed for them…especially for him.

King Trewyn goads me, but my body doesn’t care that he’s forbidden. He watches me like he knows what I’m hiding. Like he’s daring me to break. Like he’s already decided I’m his, and he’s just waiting for me to admit it.

But with a darker enemy rising, one that drains magic and leaves only husks behind, I’ll have to choose: avenge my sister or trust the king who’s become my greatest temptation.

Vengeance is a mask. And mine is about to shatter.

I loved the beginning of Trew and Isi’s slow burn, enemies-to-lovers story. The storyline was imaginative, the characters brilliant, and the writing addictive, all amidst phenomenal world building which is woven beautifully together scene by scene, layer by layer until it became a living breathing place full of three dimensional beings. This is the first book in a duology so be prepared for the resolution of smaller story arcs without a resolution of the main story arc and ends on a cliffhanger. In Princess Amarissa/Isi’s court having magic is a death sentence and she is the lady of mercy who is forced to deliver it. She hates the practice and rebels in small ways. When her sister is murdered, she infiltrates what she believes is a slapdash rebel court as a new recruit. To do so, she will have to pass the Rite of Bonds in order to learn to control her magic after bonding with a dangerous beast. When Syllavar Court is not what Isi expected, she begins to question all she has been taught. She may have to find the strength to choose vengeance or embrace a golden eyed king. While this is a dark fantasy, there is also light here, goodness, hope, and love which makes it a deeply emotional book. This epic romantasy included engaging dialogue, three dimensional characters, and a captivating storyline as shown through intrigue, fighting, dangerous situations, paranormal creatures, soulless beasts, loyal friends, found family, tragic back stories, secrets, mystical coincidences, snark, laughs, spice, and unexpected plots twists. I am loving Isi’s character arc and growth into the fierce woman she was born to be and am looking forward to reading the next book. 4.5 stars.

Piper Goodeve and Theo Sinclair did a phenomenal job narrating the story and characters into life with enough change of inflection, tone and cadence to voice multiple characters quite convincingly. I love when a narration like this one takes a great story and elevates it into something more.

This book was everything and more! Just the right amount of world building, slow burn, banter, yearning and a fierce fmc who takes no one’s crap and doesn’t need saving! This was a legit 5 STAR and can’t wait for book 2!
