A heartbroken widow. A suspicious accident. And a cat who always trusts his instincts.
Mallory Beck never thought delivering a casserole could get her tangled up in murder. But when a routine act of kindness leads her straight into the heart of the Montrose family’s secrets, Mallory finds herself in the middle of a mystery with more layers than her lasagna.
Still reeling from her husband’s sudden passing, Mallory is just starting to rebuild—one home-cooked meal at a time. But when a teenage girl loses her father in a supposed hit-and-run, Mallory can’t shake the feeling that something's not right. Especially after Hunch, her prickly but perceptive cat, takes an unusual interest in the grieving household—and in the widow who seems just a little too composed.
As whispers turn into clues and casseroles into conversations, Mallory—with Hunch never far from her side—begins to unravel a tangled web of lies, family resentments, and long-buried secrets.
If you love feel-good whodunits, intuitive pets, and heroines finding strength in second chances, you’ll feel right at home in Honeysuckle Grove.

The author's skill in writing really pulls this book together in a way that is cohesive for such a small book with such a big plot. While action packed, this book really does get you to feel for Mallory as a widow coming out of mourning and trying to find her way into a small town life she hasn't lived in since she was a little girl. If you have ever lived in a small southern town then you will automatically understand how difficult it can be for an outsider, new church goer, and a single career woman to make a go of it. Now add in trying to be a positive role model for a grieving teenager, rekindling a flame, and solving a murder all at once.
No wonder Mallory takes to talking to her late husband's cat and taking him everywhere with her. A very perceptive kitty cat at that, honestly I think credit to solving most of the mysteries in this book goes to him. I'm not sure if Hunch is supposed to be sentient, or if he is just a very very good kitty, but either way I care for him.
That said THE CAT LIVES AND IS OKAY. This was probably the most not okay part of the book for me was towards the end Hunch is injured by murderer and due to the circumstances his medical care is delayed. I almost put the book down because of this.
I also feel it is important to note that this book does deal with a wealthy family mistreating and controlling their immigrant housekeeper and her son (stereotypes are used), and so I feel that part of the storyline has not aged well. I would also like to note that the Mallory is a recent grieving widow after her husband died in a violent manner.
Overall this book is very action packed and the sweet parts, including lots of delicious recipes, do have me wanting to continue reading this series! I would not have read this book if it had not been recently recorded as an audiobook, so kudos to Cara Firestone as the brilliant narrator.
I have received this audiobook as a gift from the author in exchange for my honest review.
