The cocky star QB and the team's sarcastic water boy. What could go wrong? A sports romance with humor and heart from the author of They Hate Each Other

Cameron Morelli is hot sh*t. Worse, he knows it. With a godlike physique and a position as his varsity football team’s star quarterback, there’s nobody he can’t charm. So one might imagine his mortification when he’s rejected by Mason Gray, the team’s snarky water boy. To make matters worse, this disgrace is followed by Cam’s coach benching him until he can get his grades up. Luckily, a reliable tutor steps forward to help Cam reclaim his dignity—the boy who just humiliated him.

For Mason, tutoring an airheaded jock is nothing but a distraction from a past he can’t escape. What he doesn’t expect is to find something worthwhile in their conversations—something softening in the ice between them. Nor does Cam expect that Mason’s calm smile hides a harrowing story. As they slowly nudge through each other’s steel gates, the dangerous realities beyond high school threaten their deepening bond.

But really, it’s about football.

The story covers deep topics of bullying and domestic violence, that’s done in a respectful way. The two main characters are victims of abuse opening up to each other and eventually helping each other through their traumas. It doesn’t have any type of 🌶️🔥, but doesn’t really need it. There are many sweet intimate moments. The narrators do an amazing job conveying feeling and the pacing of their reading style felt real and authentic. It is a bit of a slow burn if that’s not your thing but I think for the type of story this is, it’s kind of necessary.

It’s sweet but with heavy themes

This book made me cry approximately 7 times. A lovely read. This author depicts the inner thoughts of traumatized people really well. Ouch! 😭

I don't usually read stories like this as it triggers a lot of trauma ...and I definitely cried. I wasn't expecting this type of story based on the summary and reviews but but it very accurately represents how emotional abuse escalates and the mindset that developes from abuse. It was an amazing story and Mason's mindset of "it's good more than it's bad" and talking yourself into sucking it up bc the good outweighs the bad.... I remember telling myself that at one point so it resonated with me ...along with the abusers not even realizing that they were abusive... fantastic book but beware that it's a bit heavier for those who have experienced abuse and a bit "dramatic" for those who haven't (as stated by another review)

Amazing representation of emotional abuse, sweet story

This book was such an emotional read. I thought it would be a light hearted jock and waterboy romance but it was SO much more. If you want to be surrounded by a hug and need to know that's someone's always gonna find your corner (and stay in it) read it.

Not your average jock story 💬
