Charlianne Grangier’s current project for the Quitney Corners City Council is to rescue the mountain towns of Fletchers and Drumbles. Tourism, is dead. They had already built a bridge hoping to unite their towns in the fight for survival, but accidents happened and visitors bankrupted them with lawsuits. The residents are desperate for help.
Fletchers, once renown for beautiful forests, has been devastated by tree blight. Mushrooms are now abundant in the dead wood and edible varieties can be a good source of revenue. But people have died from eating the ones that are not.
Drumbles, in years past was a destination for serious cavers and excitable amateurs. How could it happen that everybody has forgotten where the caves entrances were located?
Charlie is not interested in inheriting another property. But her Aunt Mallie’s grateful old friend willed Brown House back to her anyway. Brown House, is unfortunately located in the general mountainous area of the floundering little towns. Murder, in a property she inherited, no longer surprises her friends.
Residents deny the existence of mystery cats, but sightings both real and imaginary, are frequent. Even Deputy Morlyn Wardley has seen a ghost cat floating in the mountain air in Crevice Canyon.
Only Charlie could be involved in a dangerous situation where a dog who might have witnessed a murder is placed in a witness protection program.
Karst terrain, which is good for caves in Drumbles, has also been known to produce sink holes that swallow pieces of the town. The caves provide homes for bats and hiding places for secrets some residents prefer to forget.
