THE INSPIRATION FOR THE PEACOCK TV SERIES STARRING AMANDA SEYFRIED

ONE OF BARACK OBAMA'S FAVORITE BOOKS OF THE YEAR—BY THE AUTHOR OF THE GOD OF THE WOODS

AN INSTANT NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • A GOOD MORNING AMERICA BOOK CLUB PICK

Two sisters travel the same streets, though their lives couldn't be more different. Then one of them goes missing.

In a Philadelphia neighborhood rocked by the opioid crisis, two once-inseparable sisters find themselves at odds. One, Kacey, lives on the streets in the vise of addiction. The other, Mickey, walks those same blocks on her police beat. They don't speak anymore, but Mickey never stops worrying about her sibling.

Then Kacey disappears, suddenly, at the same time that a mysterious string of murders begins in Mickey's district, and Mickey becomes dangerously obsessed with finding the culprit--and her sister--before it's too late.

Alternating its present-day mystery with the story of the sisters' childhood and adolescence, Long Bright River is at once heart-pounding and heart-wrenching: a gripping suspense novel that is also a moving story of sisters, addiction, and the formidable ties that persist between place, family, and fate.

"[Moore’s] careful balance of the hard-bitten with the heartfelt is what elevates Long Bright River from entertaining page-turner to a book that makes you want to call someone you love.” – The New York Times Book Review

"This is police procedural and a thriller par excellence, one in which the city of Philadelphia itself is a character (think Boston and Mystic River). But it’s also a literary tale narrated by a strong woman with a richly drawn personal life – powerful and genre-defying.” – People

"A thoughtful, powerful novel by a writer who displays enormous compassion for her characters. Long Bright River is an outstanding crime novel… I absolutely loved it."

Editor's Pick

A literary thriller that boasts plot and character
"I worked in a high school in Kensington, Philadelphia back in 2010 when the Kensington Strangler murdered at least 3 women and hid their bodies in an abandoned row home near the school. Looking back on it, the whole situation was really intense, but every day in Kensington was (and is) so intense that I think most people didn’t have the energy or the resources to fully care. In Kensington overdose deaths are incredibly common, and poverty strains and taxes every facet of daily life. To see Liz Moore, an author I’m a huge fan of for her previous work The Unseen World, turn her emotionally adept and aesthetically precise eye to a time and place that was so powerful for me, felt immediately personal. And you don’t have to know Kensington for Long Bright River to hit close to home. It boasts a riveting plot but at every step works to establish the character of and give voice to an incredibly resilient community that has seen far more than its share of misfortune."—Michael D., Audible Editor

I absolutely loved this.

Eloquent writing, vivid setting, intimately-drawn characters, multi-layered plot. This is a very personal character study that feels like non-fiction. The setting is the gritty side of inner-city Philadelphia, full of abandoned buildings, desperate drug addicts and sex workers struggling through the opioid epidemic. The tone is melancholy and bleak. The chapters alternate between “Then” and “Now,” which explores the childhood and history of Michaela and her sister Kasey, while also propelling the narrative’s mystery which paints a larger portrait of society. This is not your typical quick-read crime-thriller. It's much deeper and much more engrossing.

Strongly recommended for fans of audiobooks: Winter's Bone, Mystic River, Fourth of July Creek, Where All Light Tends to Go

I enjoy a multi-level plot. There were several twists in this story. Narration could have been better with character voices however I didn't mind it. This was a quick read. Not a 5 star for me as the ending fell a bit flat. Great book for a book club.

Story was very good. The reader was too monotonous; not enough inflection in her voice. Or you needed to use different voices.

Good story, reader was a little too monotone

As a Licensed Mental Health Provider I understand the concept and difficulty of addiction but Mickey’s priority needed to be her son Thomas and healing herself. The pathological enmeshment of these families is a huge problem in real life. The cost to society of these addicted babies and addicts is high not just financially but the loss of talent, love and unknown gifts is so high and sad

Addicts as victims

Story kept me in its grip, dealing with such difficult subjects as the struggle of addiction, corruption within the police force, and neonatal withdrawal with insight and sensitivity. So well written!

Page turner, gripping story
