Alderman James is back!
Alderman James has left his prestigious civic duties in Dublin behind. Back in his native London, he is savoring the quiet comforts of retirement when a chance encounter with a criminal unexpectedly brings him to the attention of the Bow Street Runners—the fledgling law enforcement body in the capital city.
As James is drawn deeper into a baffling serial murder investigation, what begins as civic duty becomes dangerously personal with every turn. With the aid of Louise Tanner, an intrepid investigative journalist for a popular penny dreadful, he navigates London's shadowy underworld to uncover the truth behind the nocturnal killings terrorizing the city.
In the gaslit streets of London, where fog conceals both mystery and murderer, James must rely on his alderman's wisdom and newfound detective skills to stop a killer before the body count rises further.

The story itself has a lot going for it. I really enjoyed the historical setting and the moody, gaslit atmosphere, it adds so much depth to the mystery. I also liked the partnership between James and Louise, and the investigation kept me curious enough to keep listening.
Having read the Dolocher series, I especially appreciated getting more of James’s backstory here. It added an extra layer to his character and made the experience feel richer, like I already had a bit of connection to him going in.
That said, I did feel a bit unsatisfied by the end. Some parts of the story felt like they needed more closure, and I was left with a few unanswered questions that I wish had been explored further.
Overall, it’s a solid start to a series with a strong atmosphere and excellent narration. Just be prepared for a bit of lingering mystery even after it’s over.
Great atmosphere and narration

I was gifted an Audible version of this book from the author through Story Origin. The narrator, Simon B Kelly, works perfectly for these characters and this time. Very English. Very easy to understand. 5 stars for him as well.
