“This gentle story of appreciation for the people and things that make up a life will renew your spirit.”—Oprah Daily (Best Books of Spring)
As ninety-two-year-old Florence "Flo" Greene nears the end of her life, she writes a letter to Ruthie, the woman who grew up next door to her, describing the items Flo is leaving Ruthie in her will. But as it goes on, telling surprising stories about those “little” things Flo will leave behind (What could possibly be the worth of a rubber band kept in a matchbox tied up in red ribbon?), an unforgettable portrait of the life she has lived emerges.
The letter starts off as an autobiography in things, but it turns out to do much more than that: ultimately, it will transform Flo and those around her. In the time she has left, Flo decides to take herself up on tiny dares. She encourages Ruthie to reconsider her impending divorce by sharing a startling, long-buried secret about her own perfect-seeming marriage. Flo has never had a pedicure before now, and as long as she's going to a beauty parlor, she arranges to have a blue streak put in her hair, too. And as these adventures lead her to make new friends, Flo helps them, too, find the fulfillment that living a full life has led her to understand.
Full of Elizabeth Berg's characteristic mix of warmth, humor, and poignancy, Life: A Love Story is a reminder that whatever your circumstances, as long as you're alive, you can keep on investing in life. The joy will inevitably follow.

“[Inspires] readers to laughter and tears alike . . . Berg brilliantly injects profound thoughts on finding beauty amid life’s difficulties through the wise words of unforgettable Flo. Life resonates with relatable characters, consequential little things, and the power of forgiveness. Fans of Anne Tyler and Sue Monk Kidd will appreciate Flo’s evocative story. . . .The prolific Berg has a huge following, and this is the author at her heartwarming best.”—Booklist, starred review

Yet another gorgeous story from Elizabeth Berg.

Or I’m walking around feeling like I won the Megabucks Lottery every single day I was given. Every day since as well, but it started when I WON the girl! It was like walking around with the Championship Belt on man. Spring of 2001 was when we began and those of you who know what really falling deeply in love with a person knows. This was even MORE amazing given many other variables that the good Lord moved into place for me to win her over and she’s still my best friend 25yrs & now 1/2 of our lives together later.
The feeling of being little is always something she is conjuring up in me as well and this book is no different. If there’s one thing to be said about this book and her other books it’s that Ms. Berg was and always has been paying attention along the journey. I like to think that i was born with this 6th sense as well and it’s why I just love her books. Every few months I need my injection of a Berg book. She does such a great job with the narration too. What’s better when the actual author reading their work? One thing…when they’re great at it! And she is.
This book has a bit of an interesting twist as each of her others all do too. This one has a great correspondence with her longtime daughter-like friend. Someone the protagonist was somewhat of a Mother figure to when she was a little girl and the tales Berg recalls about the little girl are downright laugh-aloud funny! Exactly lifelike! It took me back times I totally remember myself as a little kid. Picking scabs, blurting out adult sayings I had no idea the meaning of, and the small designs on things around you back then where you stop and think to yourself “oh that’s right…” It’s such a pleasing feeling and I love it.
Here I am a 51 year old burly construction worker ripping thru Elizabeth Berg books! I can’t help it. It’s an itch I love to scratch.
Classic Bergy!
