Explore one of the most dynamic movements of our time: liberation theology.

In the midst of poverty and oppression, liberation theology emerged in 20th-century Latin America as a beacon of hope. By thinking about their faith in innovative ways, believers wrestled with these profound social problems. Dramatic in its context and sweeping in its scope, liberation theology continues to offer fascinating ways to engage with issues such as inequality, violence, and ecological concerns.

Now, Liberation Theology gives you the opportunity to understand its context and implications today. When you listen to this superbly taught course, you will explore how to address economic, political, and social liberation with a robust and meaningful faith.

In these 12 lectures, you will explore such questions as: What does it mean to understand Jesus Christ as a liberator? How is sin social as well as personal? How can the church be of and for the poor? As you encounter the richness that is found in a spirituality of liberation, you will reflect upon the meaning of the Gospel and your own faith, discovering how all believers are called to care for the poor.

Liberation theology prompts questions for all people interested in the pressing social issues of our day. Learn how to live in a world calling for justice, hoping for peace, and needing reconciliation today.

Critic reviews

"Michael Lee is a gifted teacher, as well as one of our most profound experts of Latin American liberation theology. He communicates his deep theological knowledge with enviable clarity and with a compelling account of its implications for Christian discipleship today. Lee engages the heart and the mind - and transforms both!" (Mary Doak, Associate Professor, University of San Diego)
"Michael E. Lee epitomizes a new generation of Catholic theologians whose scholarship skillfully bridges the richness of Latin American and US Catholic theological inquiry through Hispanic eyes. His passionate commitment to studying Ignacio Ellacuría and Liberation Theology definitely makes him a...'must-listen-to' scholar today." (Hosffman Ospino, Assistant Professor of Theology and Religious Education, Boston College, School of Theology and Ministry)

You will be changed by this program. The content was inspiring. It will give you some perspective on something way more important and far reaching than the current scandal. You will focus on something quite a bit more uncomfortable than your current probably comfortable life. And if it is an uncomfortable life, chances are you are not picking through a garbage dump trying to to live nor will someone come in the middle of the night to arrest you because of your belief in Salvation. As rated, the material was just brilliant as was the presentation. The content applies to our lives not just those poor in Latin America and elsewhere in the world.

Brilliantly conceived and presented.

Not the best "performed" lecture. Also not an overview of ALL liberation theology. As an intro to the field and a history of its origins in Latin America, it succeeds.

Insightful, approachable
