I walked into this one expecting a straightforward serving of teenage angst, coming-of-age hurdles, and the classic "17-year-old vs. parents" drama. Instead, Mary Kubica handed me a high-speed thriller that left me questioning my own detective skills.
The Structure:
The story is told through dual timelines and perspectives: Reese, the oldest daughter, and her Aunt Courtney. This "double-vision" approach is brilliant—it slowly stacks layers of suspicion until the tension is almost unbearable.
The Highlights:
The Suspicion: I’ll admit it: I thought the "bad guy" was literally every single character except the actual murderer. Kubica is the queen of red herrings; she leads you down a path, lets you get comfortable, and then pulls the rug out.
The Family Core: What I loved most was the nuanced look at family dynamics. On the surface, it looks like they’re at each other's throats, but the narrative reveals they’re really just navigating a difficult "season of life." It felt authentic rather than just dramatic for the sake of drama.
The Social Commentary: There is a chillingly accurate look at how younger children view social media and strangers. It’s a sobering reminder of how a small joke or a "harmless" prank can snowball into a devastating, life-altering mistake.
The Verdict:
A total rollercoaster of emotions. It’s informative, suspenseful, and a little bit heartbreaking. If you enjoy domestic thrillers that actually make you think about the "why" behind the "who," put this on your TBR immediately.

The story kept me on the edge of my seat. I love this author and I really enjoy Brittany Presley narration. I found towards the end of this thriller I got a pang in my heart and felt emotional. I listen to books everyday and in this genre there can be little I can’t guess, but this ending I did not see!!! I recommend this book!!

This story is good. I liked it, but it wasn't a wow. I was interested in finding out what happened to the girl and her family, but I didn't find any of the characters especially likable. The final chapter was likely supposed to be a surprise ending and I found that to be predictable.

A good mystery with an excellent narration
