A fresh look at the earliest Christian movement reveals what made the new faith so compelling...and what we need to change today to make it so again.

Once upon a time there was a version of the Christian faith that was practically irresistible. After all, what could be more so than the gospel that Jesus ushered in? Why, then, isn't it the same with Christianity today?

Author and pastor Andy Stanley is deeply concerned with the present-day church and its future. He believes that many of the solutions to our issues can be found by investigating our roots. In Irresistible, Andy chronicles what made the early Jesus Movement so compelling, resilient, and irresistible by answering these questions:

  • What did first-century Christians know that we don't—about God's Word, about their lives, about love?
  • What did they do that we're not doing?
  • What makes Christianity so resistible in today's culture?
  • What needs to change in order to repeat the growth our faith had at its beginning?

Many people who leave or disparage the faith cite reasons that have less to do with Jesus than with the conduct of his followers. It's time to hit pause and consider the faith modeled by our first-century brothers and sisters who had no official Bible, no status, and little chance of survival. It's time to embrace the version of faith that initiated—against all human odds—a chain of events resulting in the most significant and extensive cultural transformation the world has ever seen.

This is a version of Christianity we must remember and re-embrace if we want to be salt and light in an increasingly savorless and dark world.

Andy Stanley has a unique way of getting my attention and this audiobook is no exception. Irresistible grabbed my attention and I listened at every chance I got until finished. I think everyone should read or listen to this book. Then make your own decisions. I intend to listen again. I bought the book so I can go through it while listening and mark everything I'd like to highlight. Amazing. Don't miss this. It's all about Jesus. Jesus is everything.

I loved this book because it aligns with my Wesleyan and holiness theology beautifully. Andy Stanley obviously got to this place on his own which is commendable and beneficial to me since his vocabulary and phrasing and scriptural references are new.

For most of the book the first line in every paragraph should have started, “as our Weslyan brothers and sisters have said for 300 years...”.

His jab against American holiness people is more descriptive of his southern grandfather’s small world than it was of the movement as a whole. I have a good collection of turn of the 20th century holiness books and not a single one talks about legalism and every single one talks about the supremacy of love.

Regardless, this book was totally inspiring to me to remember that our faith stands on Christ’s resurrection and the Spirit living in us. I hope to re-adjust my ministry and life to get back on track on with love. I loved the phrasing he used about sin. As far as his understanding of Wesleyan theology, I would say he has a 9th grade grasp of it. Not that he cares. But considering that he started from near total obliviousness of it and has progressed this far, we can see where he’s going next. Thank you Andy. You are helping us bring a new generation to Jesus. Don’t stop now.

Looks like Andy finally got to the place Wesley has been at for 300 years.

I've struggled with how to reach people for whom the phrase "the Bible says..." means nothing: family, raised in church, but unbelieving today. thank you for real answers.

I've grown up in church. 3rd generation church and Christ follower. However Andy so clearly places the thoughts, questions, and clearly answers to some of the greatest questions I've been asked by men I've discipled.

I'm so glad I read this, read it with your significant other I'm sure you'll have plenty to talk about.

If you grew up in church... Read this.
