An in-depth look at why America is losing the War on Terror and what we should do if we really want to defeat Osama bin Laden and al-Qaeda.

"I first met al-Qaeda before there was an al-Qaeda, way back in the winter of 1984. It was an encounter that came within a split second of costing me my life."

So begins Rob Schultheis's gripping account of his journey into the heart of one of the world's most dangerous places, on the trail of the world's most wanted man. A veteran war correspondent (he was one of a handful of Western journalists who covered the Russian war in Afghanistan from inside the country), Schultheis offers a first-hand look at how the seeds of al-Qaeda were planted by foreign jihadists in the 1980s, before most Americans knew what the word "jihad" meant.

He then offers a radical assessment of why bin Laden remains at large, detailing the complicit role Pakistan has played in both offering him sanctuary and in helping al-Qaeda establish an almost impregnable stronghold in the Middle East. Finally, fresh from a recent visit to Afghanistan and armed with analysis of current satellite imagery, Schultheis makes his case for where exactly Osama bin Laden is hiding - and why the U.S. government is not acting on this information.

Editorial reviews

Veteran war correspondent Rob Schultheis begins his exhaustive examination of why the United States is losing the War on Terror with a chilling statement: "I first met al-Qaeda before there was an al-Qaeda, way back in the winter of 1984. It was an encounter that came within a split second of costing me my life." His encounters with jihadists and his experiences in Afghanistan bolster his assessment of the American position in the conflict. Voice actor Fred Sanders delivers the material in a straightforward and engaging manner. His clear narration complements the complex material.

This author sounds like an islamist apologist convert who's fallen for the English/Western grievance narrative. couldn't get past chapter 2.

Good story telling but very biased from the start in my opinion. I would have preferred if he would have tried to stay somewhat neutral . Some mistakes ,ISI in Pakistan is not a Salafi or a wahabi organization it is predominantly moderate Sunni people but ilike any intelligence agency it has done some bad things no doubt.
Lot of mistakes of Islamic history caliph Usman did not die in a war but was assassinated by his own violent people who were against him , and there were some more mistakes.
Wahabis do not think that Christian’s and Jews are descendants of pigs and monkeys totally false , although wahabi are very rigid and can be violent . They believe Jews and Christian’s are people of the book and respect them to done extent .
Extreme wahabis have more enemosity towards fellow Muslims if they consider them heretics . ( author mentions that and he is correct)

Good story but highly biased
