Mary Elizabeth Braddon (1835-1915) was a British Victorian era novelist famous for her sensationalist writing.

'Good Lady Ducayne' is a sensational tale of a young woman, Bella Rolleston, who secures a job as a paid companion to a very elderly and wealthy aristocratic lady who offers her a handsome salary, a winter travelling on the Italian Riviera and the Italian Lakes and very little to do.

It all seems too good to be true. And when Bella learns that the old lady's previous two companions died under mysterious circumstances and she herself is becoming paler and sicker...it does seem as though something sinister is afoot.

The narration made it very difficult to enjoy this story. I did enjoy it a little bit as it was a sinister and subtle vampire story. Hopefully there may be a better version recorded soon.

Bad Narration

Narrator's intonations were a bit strange. There was a lilt to the end of many words and phrases that was annoying. However, the story was well written, so it was worth a listen.

Good story, So So narrator

Story felt still unfinished even at the end. it seems like there should have been more.

A simple little story I ran across in grad school - an interesting example of pre-Dracula vampire literature, though there is no supernatural presence in this story. The narration could be better - there is little inflection, no voice difference between characters, and some vocal oddities in cadence - but it is sufficient.

A curious little tale

The narrator was so bad I had a really hard time understanding what was being said and couldn't appreciate the story fully when I was so annoyed with the narration. I think I'll read the book instead
