I’ll tell you a secret: you don’t have to hit rock bottom to realize that alcohol is holding you back.

In this honest blend of memoir and self-help, Functional pulls back the curtain on the hidden world of high-functioning alcohol use disorder—where success at life masks the constant struggle with the bottle. The book addresses the high performers who juggle careers, family, and a full calendar, but quietly pour that nightly glass (or three) just to cope. Functionals are careful never to let their addiction show in public, and the stress of maintaining this masquerade compounds the need for liquid relief.

Sharing personal experience, the author explores what it means to be a Functional and offers a pathway to overcoming alcohol dependence and regaining control of your life. Whether you’re curious about being sober, ready to take a break, or want to examine your relationship with drinking, this candid and relatable book presents solutions. From what to expect in the first thirty days to practical tools for navigating social situations without a drink in your hand, Functional is your guide to achieving freedom from alcohol.

Wow! I wish I had this book at the beginning of my sobriety journey! This is a new quit lit classic on par with This Naked Mind and others. Functional will help so many people! I loved the balance of personal stories and useful tips. What a concise and well executed book! A must read for all high functioning alcoholics.

It is a well written book, I loved all the tips that the author provided in the book, it was an easy listen as well I made tons of notes. I also liked how the author kept repeating the fact that these suggestions worked for her and we should pick one or two items that might work for each one of us. Additionally I loved the ending where the Past Rachel and Present Rachel are talking to each other. Also I think the suggestions in this book apply to all sorts of addictions, for me it is definitely food. It has encouraged me to start thinking about it and use the tips for my betterment.
