Fortune’s Stroke is the fourth installment in the Belisarius saga by the writing duo of Eric Flint and David Drake. Belisarius was a sixth century Roman general. In the alternative history, agents from far in the future have sent back in time an AI to ensure success of the Malwa Empire along with conquest of the Roman Empire. Belisarius has been gifted with his own AI to counteract. This time Belisarius must battle a Malwa surrogate while other actions are being set in motion.

Flint and Drake continue the creative alternate history with the Belisarius AI offering increasingly sophisticated technology that is implementable against a backdrop of sixth century capabilities. At the same time, Belisarius always seems to employ unique and elegant strategies to enhance the impact.

The narration is great with excellent character distinction. Pacing is smooth.

This has been one of my favorite series for years. Like others I waited impatiently for Audible to get their act together and make it available. Now all they have to do is get the final two books out. With this virus stuff going on I could use the distraction.

4/5 I'd go 9/10. Just could not quite go all in. Descent book all around. Fun historical science fiction kind of feel to it. I'll buy the next one too if he decides to bust out another.
