In this #1 New York Times bestseller, a child is kidnapped at a presidential retreat and two former Secret Service agents must become private investigators in a desperate search that might destroy them both.

A daring kidnapping turns a children's birthday party at Camp David, the presidential retreat, into a national security nightmare.

Former Secret Service agents turned private investigators Sean King and Michelle Maxwell don't want to get involved. But years ago Sean saved the First Lady's husband, then a senator, from political disaster. Now the president's wife presses Sean and Michelle into a desperate search to rescue a kidnapped child. With Michelle still battling her own demons, the two are pushed to the limit, with forces aligned on all sides against them-and the line between friend and foe impossible to define ... or defend.

Critic reviews

"Plenty of action drives Baldacci's stellar fourth novel to feature Maxwell and King."—Publishers Weekly (starred review)
"Fightening...shocking...Sean and Michelle [are] surely one of the more interesting teams of private investigators...Baldacci is a more subtle writer now, able to tell stories of deep moral ambiguity and to create characters who balance on the line between hero and villain...It will be fascinating to watch where he takes these two heroes from here."

"It's always a good thing when David Baldacci brings back former FBI agents King and Maxwell."
New York Daily News
"Mr. Baldacci's books are jigsaw puzzles of intersecting events, not simple whodunits. FIRST FAMILY is no exception."—Washington Times
"What Baldacci does best is provide thrills, chills, and suspense. This novel is a total surprise from beginning to end."—Columbus Telegram
"The story unfolds wonderfully. It's another top-flight thriller from this bestselling author, and it's good to see King and Maxwell again."—Oklahoman

The book was great, as expected. My only criticism is around the sound effects of the audiobook. It is the first audiobook that I have listened to that contains gunfire, explosion, lightning and other sound effects. It either implies the listener has no imagination or some sound tech was overzealous and couldn't keep his newly acquired sound clip library in check.

Annoying sound effects

Okay... if I were a reader (as opposed to a listener) I'd report that this was, well, maybe not an eye glazer but at least an eye mister. The plot's ok... but the narrative demands more disbelief suspension than the writer's earlier novels. The magic's gone between the author's male and female leads. There's a filler mystery carefully inserted into the middle of this thing so, I suppose, the principle tale wouldn't have seemed a short story. And there are more addendum-type chapters at the end than there are dwarfs skipping after Snow White.

While not a total waste of time, knowing now, what I gathered from listening to the entire novel... I'd not have started "First Family." Can't recommend it even though Ron McLarty does a very serviceable job of reading - I will buy more of his work.

One last point, I skipped over a number of Baldacci novels this series because they were read by the portentous Scott Brick. Maybe if McLarty had read them to me... this one would not have been so much like wet cardboard? Who knows?

Dunno if I'll purchase another Baldacci even though I've enjoyed his work in the past.

Baldacci's Loosing Steam... Pass this one up.

I am a huge fan of David Baldacci and am never disappointed by his novels. This one was incredible and I was disappointed when it ended.

LOVED IT!!

I normally love this author but this one was a let down. It needs a female narrator like some of the Will Robie books have and overall the story was boring. It got better toward the end but I would not recommend it. That said, I will be ordering the next installment in the Will Robie series that comes out in November, so it wasn't bad enough to turn me away from the author.

I love Baldacci, but pass on this one

The story sounds like something out of Washington, D.C.,
Great characters, thrilling storyline .
I felt bad for Mic her storyline was very sad

Bill and Hillary must have been the inspiration
