When Isabel Moore's father dies, she finds herself, at the age of 30, suddenly freed from eleven years of uninterrupted care for a helpless man. With all the patterns of her life suddenly rendered meaningless, she turns to childhood friends for support, gets a job, and becomes involved with two very different men. But just as her future begins to emerge, her past throws up a daunting challenge. A moving story of self-reinvention, Final Payments is a timeless exploration of the nature of friendship, desire, guilt, and love.

This story is a wonderful reminder of some of the gender dynamics of the past and how women especially those from Catholic backgrounds wrestled with cultural expectations. The story is emotionally rich with perceptive character development.

Story from the 1970’s read beautifully.

I did not enjoy this book at all. It was steeped in Catholicism and what it is like to grow up as a Catholic girl. I suppose if I had been Catholic I might have related to it more. It just was quite tedious and really didn't seem to have a point. There were such extremes of behavior from the main character that it just wasn't believable. Really just seemed heavy-handed to make a point.

Too Catholic
